I honestly thought this was going to be a run-of-the-mill self-insert at first. Then I got to the second part, and I liked it.
Good job, man.
The writing's noticeably off in a few places and I'm pretty sure we've got a fair few dream-related SCPs, but this one has serious potential.
To be fair, this was -the first- dream related SCP, but it was deleted during the mass edit.
Great work here, one of the first SCPs that's genuinely creeped me out! Out of curiosity, can the 'manifestations' be destroyed by normal means (i.e. gunfire, incineration, etc), or do they only disappear when 781 dies?
The manifestations are fully 'real' representations of whatever they appear to be, so they can be destroyed by gunfire, incineration, whatever.
Good edits have really helped this one I think, and potentially saved it, one part tripped my 'logical fallacy' button though;
"Though the subject does not exhibit resistance to injury or death beyond the limits of a normal human, twelve (12) hours after SCP-781's physical "death" any remains of its corpse disappear. Another twelve (12) hours later, a fully healthy SCP-781 appears close to the place with the largest concentration of its remains."
How can it appear next to the place of the largest concentration of it's remains, if those remains disappeared 12 hours earlier? Maybe he reappears within X meters of this place of his death instead, maybe randomizing the distance, though that distance remains within the range of his cell.
I meant to imply that he reappeared wherever the largest concentration of his remains were -before they dissappeared- but I mangled that up. In any case, your version seems neater, so I think I'll just go with that.
I really like this one. One question: If the Foundation gave him something to defend himself with, would the same nightmares adapt, or would new ones pop up?
Sounds like maybe something to explore on addendums.
I had intented it so that if either he learned to defend himself, or others defended him, it would stop the manifestations at first … but on following night's they'd get worse; to the point where the foundation would rather 781 simply die.
Might it be easier if we implanted a subcutaneous detonator, so that when (not if) one of his Nightmares picks him up and starts rampaging through the facility again, we can just press a button and explode him?
Although it's pretty likely that the Nightmares would remove it if he knew about it, so we'd have to keep it secret from him.
They might remove it even if he doesn't know about it, but it's worth trying.
Quick question, how have they perfomed Autopsies on him? For a start he is alive, second it is rare to need a second one…
Did you miss the "killed three times a week on average" part?
Since he doesn't really "die" in this world, the Foundation can kill him and perform an autopsy if needed.
The references to SCP-629 need to be removed because they are referring to the article of that time.
Question for testing: Could SCP-148 be used to control or stop the manifestations? If a telekill headband or similar apparatus were placed on the subject, what sort of phenomena would be observed?
If SCP-148 limited the destructive power of Nightmares, the subject could be kept asleep artificially to allow study of the Nightmares. If it completely stops manifestation, the Foundation would be able to limit spending on cleanup and recovery of the subject's body, control damages from rampaging Nightmares, and alleviate possible physical and mental anguish on SCP-781's part.
Just a thought.
