Not bad, though you might want to reword "dropped dead" to something a bit more formal/scientific.
I like it, but maybe the dates should be blacked out?
I was thinking about that, but couldn't decide whether or not the dates are good for the reader to suss out the puzzle (which I'll admit is extremely obvious) or if I should black them out to increase the mystery. And if I black out some of the dates, should I do all of them, including the birth dates?
I realized that shortly after I wrote it, but left it in anyway. Originally the magic number was going to be 9, but for some reason I changed it to eight when I completed the entry. In the end I don't think the shape of the lesion really matters, and having it shaped as an octagon would just be obvious.
I'm sure glad that this one ended up well liked, because my other entry (The Safehouse) sucked and was deleted. I was hoping to stick around here longer and contribute more, but burned out fairly quickly on it for whatever reason. I just came back to see how this one was doing as I'm sitting in an airport with little to do…
I'd suggest saving a copy of the TV picture and uploading it to the wiki, instead of hotlinking to the original site. You never know when news sites will decide to delete a story.
Interesting idea, though ^_^
She's right. You can upload the file to the wiki via the link at the bottom of the page, and link it from there in the image module. That way, if and when the original site deletes the page, it won't leave your image window broken.
Can I suggest comparison on the drawing of the region of space with photos of SCP 134's eyes?
How does 425 handle time zones, like, for example, someone born in Japan shortly after midnight on the 8th, when 425 is in the US, where it's still the 7th? Also, how would it affect someone born on 8/8/88?
I'm thinking that, in terms of birth dates, each person is treated by what day it was in the time zone that they were born. So in your example, even though it would be the 7th where 425 is, the person was still born on the 8th in "local time". It might be that 425 doesn't actually choose targets, but that people born on these days are somehow mentally susceptible to the effects.
As for someone born on 8/8/88… Probably a complete mind screw, like a 5 on the Mental Danger scale. Just look what happened to the person mentioned in the Addendum. It doesn't actually mention her birth date, but still…
I like it. Very well done. And the potential for more numeric creepiness could lend to some good story telling in the ol' creepipasta area too.
A nonagon is a 9-sided figure; an octagon is 8-sided. Is that deliberate?
Not bad. I feel the diction could be tightened up a little, though.
why are they testing something with mental effects like these on staff members rather than D-class personnel?
I wonder, would the FBI really be the right place to go to say "the telly's given my son nightmares and turns itself on even when unplugged"? It doesn't quite feel right to me… The again, one can always say that Mrs X simply panicked.
On a different note, I would probably get rid of the scratching reference. It doesn't seem to add anything significant to the retrieval report, feeling like the author passing some information to those in the know.
