So, this is a rewrite of the old SCP-1909, which I wrote four years ago. It was always the lowest-rated of my surviving SCPs, and although I did like it, I have to admit it had some problems:
- If Alexander the Great had the supertech to resurrect him and make him a threat to the modern world, shouldn't there have been some record of this? How exactly was he turned back at all by people from thousands of years ago?
- The tone of the inscription was more overwrought and megalomaniacal than most people associate with Alexander the Great.
- I elided rather a lot about what a 1909-Coronate event would entail, to the point where people just got annoyed by it. Some of this was because of my first bullet point. I really didn't have a good way for someone to produce a historical record similar to the true Alexander while still being a threat today, so I went very vague to avoid answering the question.
To resolve these, I took the suggestion of NovaeDeArx and made Alexander the Great not the True Alexander. This addressed nearly all the problems. Alexander the Great didn't make the supertech himself, he was instead the product of it (and it was made by some distant alien for whom it doesn't strain plausibility that they could create this). Alexander the Great doesn't need to be so insanely over-the-top megalomaniacal; that can be left to the True, Cosmic Warlord Alexander, and I could even give Alexander the Great a much more measured and bright piece. Lastly, this lets me make it really clear why a new Alexander the Great would be a very bad thing. Alexanders are reflections of the True Alexander, and I can have it be that the only reason Alexander the Great wasn't able to conquer the world was that he was trying to do it with spear-wielding soldiers who had to walk everywhere. Someone with his talents in a modern setting would therefore be even more dangerous, without even needing access to the vague supertech "Towers of Alexander" (and no, I don't know what those were). I can still have the alluded to scenario where things could get even worse, because the True Alexander can be as scarily superhuman as need be without clashing with the historically merely impressive Alexander the Great.
One more issue: the spike in "Alexander" as a name. This was the original inspiration for the SCP, and it was an element I was adamant about preserving. So where is it here? Well, you can make a case that that's what the line about "my name shall pound once more in the minds of all" means, and indeed it did in the original, but honestly, the name thing is pretty much gone. I guess I just changed my mind, and found that it didn't fit in the story I'm trying to tell here.
I hope you all enjoy this new take on an SCP of Alexander the Great!
