What happens if SCP-087-1 breaches containment.
It seems to be confined to the stairwell.
I am actually an scp but I have been rendered Ticonderoga
Well, your first posted SCP and it's already a +13.
Something tells me I won't be that lucky.
Wow this is old it's already at 2076! Hope you got lucky!
CorrectHorse, the above comment technically contributes a meaningful discussion point, and is not spam. As such, it's fine. Please let staff handle addressing necroposts.
Hey Andrei, you're replying to a 1596-day old post here, without really contributing much to the conversation.
That's necroposting and pretty much spam. Try to avoid doing that.
First off, this thing is fantastic. It deserves the score it's gotten.
Some of the language of the D-Class people struck me as unrealistic, personally, but this is an incredibly minor quibble. They just seemed a little too precise on their distance estimates, didn't feel real to me. But the concept and execution of this SCP are spot on.
It might be a good idea for one of the D-classes to use feet instead.
Yes, I know the foundation doesn't use feet, but under enough stress I doubt the D-classes are going to care particularly much.
I'd suggest have one of them cite the distance in terms of floors or stories, since they are going down a stairwell. It'd be about 40 to 50.
Sorry for the necropost, but is there any reason this was never done? Maybe not the feet (Although that may make some sense since the Foundation seems to primarily be American based. Yada yada, no canon, I know, but it still seems to be the general consensus.), but the flights seem to be a solid change given that the transcribed dialogues are generally meant to lack the clinical nature of the main articles.
I assumed it was some sort of memetic effect. That would explain why it was always the same.
I'd like to nominate this article as the first new Featured Article since the Mass Edit (not that I have any clue about that process beyond "an admin updates the Main Page").
That is pretty much the entire process, really.
Okay, it's interesting to send D-class down there unprepared. Makes for a good read. But it's also a bit wasteful, and it's not necessarily the best approach.
Next time we send someone in, they should bloody well be WARNED that a) 'partway down, you're going to start hearing a little kid crying for help. We don't think it's a real kid', and b) 'partway down, you're going to run into this creepy guy with no eyes or mouth'.
Oh, and any reason not to use infra-red viewing?
I too wondered about infra-red. It'd probably be interfered with like the light, but it would at least be worth testing.
Also, since it doesn't seem to mess with radio signals, perhaps a remote-controlled probe could be sent down?
I had the exact same thought!
to creator of this SCP: Do that as exploration V!
Well if you wanted to do things efficiently you'd send someone down there with an assault rifle to light that little bugger up, but that wouldn't be creepy, would it? Kudos to Zaeyde, by the way.
It would be creepy if the assault rifle had no effect…
That stupid-ironic "they thought they were prepared BUT THEY WERE LEAST PREPARED OF ALL" kind of thing is just cheap, though; firing guns at the eldritch horror never really works out well in fear stakes. One of the things I learned from House of Leaves and Jurassic Park is that if I have the choice of a highly experienced, well-motivated hunter or a civilian with no weapons (preferrably a minor or an unfit dude in a wheelchair) I'm to stay as far away from Mr. Gun as possible. The monster becomes either a Thing What Cheats At Not Being Killed or a Thing What Can Be Killed, neither of which is really as scary as a Thing What You Don't Know Much About (but is right behind you as you read this)
Besides, I doubt the Foundation has totally discounted that the D might find something down there and gun it down before realising that it was the Beast That Keeps Humanity Alive By Not Being Shot With An Assault Rifle or something.
The monster becomes either a Thing What Cheats At Not Being Killed or a Thing What Can Be Killed,
There's a third option: Thing What Now Has An Assault Rifle.
Did anyone else check behind them when you read this?
I was reading this with my friend and he was right behind me and scared the crap out of me.
I was reading it for the first time (in a well lit library, unfortunately) and then came here and read that post. After the last part, I just slowly re-angled my laptop to see my reflection in the screen… I was half-hoping to see a face staring at me. :/
We are the proud. The few. The Gamers.
Maybe send in a well briefed agent, with rope so he can decend down the hole.
The fourth exploration log has never been there. It's meant to make you wonder what could happen and fill you with fear; whatever happened, it's so horrible, the Foundation won't let anyone know.
In addition, this is a necropost replying to an entirely unrelated post. Please check dates before replying to a post, and if your post in question has nothing to do with another post, make it a separate post.
i don't get that seeing vital info redacted inst spooky its just unsatisfying
