Hope you like it folks.

I want to extend my thanks to JackIke, AJMansfield, Apoplexic, Mf99k, ThatGuyRiverside, Cimmerian, MrWrong, and any others in IRC chat that I forgot to mention.

This went through quite a number of iterations to get where it is. I've been tearing myself apart internally for weeks because of it, but I don't feel it'll get any better than it is currently. Hopefully it sticks, because then I can get muh author page :)

AJMansfield's incredible audio files have been added to the article. Please direct any and all praise his way, I did not make them.

I'm particularly pleased that the intelligence behind the moving volcano is responding by repeating the Golden Records. It didn't just learn human languages out of nowhere; something out there received our message and was able to decipher it.

The last expungement in the table seems unnecessary, both because Mars is the obvious next place, and because the level 4 distribution then immediately confirms it anyway (if information is expunged rather than redacted it really ought to be expunged in all instances across all distributions, otherwise it is effectively just redacted).

ETA: Apparently this was changed?

The expungement was part of the reason for my downvote (although not the primary reason). I can feel this potentially becoming a bit of a hobby horse for me - it is ludicrous for the Foundation to expunge critical information like where a skip is located or what it does to a person, because expunged information is irretrievably lost to the Foundation. Redaction is almost always the more correct option, even in the narrow range of cases where hiding information is effective from a technical writing perspective.

The only exceptions, I think, are when the information itself poses such a severe hazard that no one can be allowed to risk exposure, when the intelligence value to the Foundation is low but the risk is high (identities of the O5 for example), or when someone has sabotaged the documents in order to hide information from the rest of the Foundation.

I actually had this become a minor plot point in SCP-2512.

they expunged part of the interview as part of a mass fifthist-related cogitohazard purge following Event 1425…and then somebody realized that this wasn't just an account of a Fifthist retreat, but one of the original West Coast Fifthist retreats, from right about the time they were starting to move from "well funded cult" to "major GOI". What they expunged was basically an account of a rough draft of Star Signals and the guy who wrote it (1425-Prime), filtered and neutered by the miraculously broken brain of a burnt out hippie/half-baked shaman. There's quite a bit of info they'd love to have back on that stretched out and shredded cassette tape.

Space skips are usually great, and this one is no different. Tells a story without telling too much, and I love that it's slowly getting closer to earth.

I saw the Olympus Mons thing a mile off; the broken communication not so much.

Is "Johnny B. Goode," on the Voyager discs? If so, hells yeah that means Carl Sagan liked Chuck Berry, but if not it was a good pick on the author's part.

Reminds me of SCP-1050; I wonder if the author intended a connection?

I like it. This is a good piece of short fiction. GG, author.

SCP-1050 was a big influence on this… and why 2886 is running from where it came.

I won't say if they are the pattern screamers or not… but it's running from something that did devour its world.

This is great, I really like it! I'm a sucker for space-based SCPs and mysterious transmissions, so this has my +1. Also very nicely written.

Just a small nitpick if I may - the second paragraph of Doc 2 - a radiologist is a doctor who specialises in medical imaging (x-ray, CT, etc). May I suggest radio astronomer?

Given the context a cryptoanalyst would be the most appropriate, but as you say, a radiologist isn't appropriate at all, this isn't an X-Ray of a human body.
