Event Calendar / Discussion

This is the discussion related to the wiki page Event Calendar.

radian628 22 Jan 2026 23:03

Hi everyone! This is an event calendar page for official and unofficial events, created to help staff plan out events in advance and users to figure out their schedules, with the ultimate goal of ensuring everyone is on the same page and preventing event fatigue.

If you'd like to add an event to this page, please contact Naepic.

If you find a bug with this page, please let me (radian628) know and I will fix it as soon as I can! Also feel free to check out the source code for this project here!

Seeing Sportscon made me think this was a joke page for a bit. Honestly I'm still not 100% sure.

Also, why does Pridefest end on the 29th? I would expect to span all of June.

Miscommunication on my part regarding pridefest being "June 1st to June 30th"

I'll correct

Thanks so much for this epic page! We really needed this for a long time and we finally got something like it!

Upvote for the idea and clean layout

I really appreciate the component itself and the effort you put on it, but I believe it'd be much better if you could use pure json to store the event info in fragment:event-calendar-events.

Ty! I'm glad you like it!

Regarding JSON, we thought about using JSON or another such format early on in development; however, we concluded that I should design it to use features that nontechnical users here are are most familiar with, so that they can update the calendar long-term if I am for some reason unable to. This is why I ultimately picked a list of [[include]] blocks — most wiki staff are familiar with them and as such I suspect they'll be less likely to make mistakes or need to ask for help when creating new events. Making the "event intermediate" syntax (which, as of right now, is just a JSON object lol) simpler is another planned feature.

Update: Thinking of it more, adapting this to accept JSON as input should be relatively straightforward. After all, the Event Calendar Events fragment, under the hood, just appends items to a JavaScript array.

Here's how I'd adapt the calendar to use JSON input directly (I put it in a collapsible because it's quite long):

+ show block

You could have two pages set up like this¹:

Main Calendar Page: example-site.wikidot.com/event-calendar

[!-- css styling boilerplate omitted for brevity --]
[[html class="calendar"]]

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="https://example-site.wdfiles.com/local--files/event-calendar/main.css"/ >
<script>
// import events from other page
window.CALENDAR_EVENT_LIST =
[[include :example-site:fragment:event-calendar-events]]
;

let i = 0;

for (const e of window.CALENDAR_EVENT_LIST) {
  // calendar requires events to have unique IDs
  e.id= i;

  // convert calendar dates to ISO timestamps since pure JSON doesn't allow Date objects
  e.start = new Date(e.start);
  e.end = new Date(e.end);
  for (const int of e.intermediates ?? []) {
    int.date = new Date(int.date);
  }

  i++;
}
</script>
<script src="https://example-site.wdfiles.com/local--files/event-calendar/main.js"></script>
[[/html]]

Calendar Events Fragment: example-site.wikidot.com/fragment:event-calendar-events

[
  {
    "name": "Event Name",
    "start": "2026-03-01T00:01:00.000-05:00",
    "end": "2026-04-01T00:01:00.000-05:00",
    // ... other fields etc ...
  },
  // ... other events etc ...
]

Here's the full TypeScript type definition for a single calendar event, taken from this project's source code:

type CalendarEvent = {
  hosts: string[];
  start: Date;
  end: Date;
  name: string;
  shortName?: string;
  desc?: string;
  link?: string;
  type: "contest" | "festival" | "other";
  intermediates: CalendarEventIntermediate[];
  displayIndex: number;
  id: number;
  fancyDisplay?: "pride";
};

Footnotes

1. for clarity, example-site.wikidot.com doesn't exist; I'm just using it as an example.

pridefest2026 doesn't have a link to its hub

Nova_56 18 Sep 2026 16:11

GoI Con doesn't have it's hub. I know it's over, but for consistencies sake.
