The original SCP-186 was one of the articles that first got me interested in the wiki, back in the long long ago of 2014. I hope this rewrite does it justice.

Sincere thanks to Locke for both inspiring this rewrite and providing a ton of great feedback, as well as Croque and Tufto the GOAT for pacing assistance, Whisgoon for a vibe check, and sushimi for their super helpful comments re: in-universe characterization of the journal entries.

And of course, shoutout to Kalinin for writing the original 186.

In my opinion, the log of anomalous events in the original was more creepy. However, you've done a great job expanding on the characters, especially Durand. The Coffin is also a great addition, tying into your efforts to delve more into Durand's motivations and exploring the logical conclusion of his ambition. Overall, I believe you have done the original justice and am very grateful that Kalinin's work continues to live on in a way. +1

Really happy with how this turned out. Though it was a pain to lose many Kal works, all were mostly self-contained. By contrast, the removal of this orphaned 3 tales, and removed the context for a pair of characters that have been used by a half dozen authors.

It’s not just an excellent rewrite (with the bonus of further elaboration to set itself as distinct from the original), but it’s actively patching a wound. Damn fine job. +1

I agree, but there was another work by Kal that was heavily referenced by other objects, namely Khevtuul 1, for example, it is an important part of the Project Heimdall.

The constraints of arguing about nuclear arms from the perspective of First World War scientists is a compelling framing device I'd never thought of before, and I think this is a more than adequate take on the idea. This skirts close to a lot of the ideas that made 3790 so incredibly effective at evoking dread for me, to the point that the page image twigged me to the potential that the DoA was going to be involved somehow, which delighted me greatly.

I also really enjoyed the original, but this is a great rewrite of it, definitely expands on it while preserving the core concepts that made it so unsettling.

While I love the rewrite, I do quite miss the letter from the original.

I am sending this letter with him in the hopes that he does. As I gave it to him, he joked that he will get a civil service commission after the war for delivering a letter from Hell. I am not certain he is wrong. Goodbye, Pyotr

What a nice way to redecorate the 186 slot! Leaving it the same as it was before with a rewrite satisfies me. I enjoyed that Kaliningrad is mentioned in the article to remind us of Kalinin and there's also cameos of the Department of Abnormalities and Ansel Cairns. I enjoyed seeing both those names enough to upvote and congratulate.
