Long, autistic ramble about this tale

I hadn’t read Gawain and the Green Knight since the tenth grade, but it’s the one Arthurian story I actually read prior to the contest. I think it sticks out for the fact that it’s not about bravery and chivalry as much as most Arthurian legends are. In the context of child soldiers in WWII, I figured it would be important to note the original story’s ’Hey, so long as you’re a good person, it’s ok to not want to blindly follow orders to lay down your life for something’ ending.

SCP-4000 had been on my mind and since it is, ultimately, the end result of a genocide ( though how said genocide happened is not known yet in eventyr). Obviously I don’t need to state the connection between WWII and genocide/ displaced people of war I hope. it came to mind when I was thinking about the original story’s themes about Christianity and paganism and the erasure of peganism by Christianity. Everything to do with the geeen knight and the chapel is so very paganism coded. In the end this all led me to circle back around to fairies and the fae, since in some versions of the Green Knight, Morgan was involved in setting the whole thing up.

I had to gut a large part of the original since it’s a very sensual story and the characters are young girls, but queerness isn’t lost. Peggy and Gabrielle are very doomed yuri.

Some other things
- The fox idea was pulled from the fox in the original story that is hunted down and causes problems
- Same thing with the fire maiden being inspired by the wife from the original, which worked happily with the rules for type 2 entering 4000 and queer themes.
- The tale is titled after the Old Gods of Appalachia episode sharing it’s name. Mostly for this section:

Let us finally admit we were digging graves the whole time, and that what we were burning was the daylight we promised to those we called precious, and baby, and little man.

Let us confess that tomorrows never mattered to us.

That promises were enough. That what is good enough for us will be good enough for them.

Even when there is no good left.

Enough.”

It made me think about the pointless sacrifice of families in war, etc. a lor.
- Character deaths in 8037 are foreshadowed here. Everyone’s got at least one Omen in this story if you know where to look for it.
- This tale has a [playlist]
- This whole thing was originally going to be a comic. That obviously didn’t happen lol

Funnily enough, this is my first real written work on the wiki! ✨ huzxah. This has honestly all been pretty amazing and I’m so honored to have been able to participate in this con with my teammates sailorenoch and rottingraisins who are the absolute best. Thank you two for putting up with my… everything; especially the way my ADHD had us working on my article down to the last hour. I’m so happy that we got to create something so good together 🫶

Hey, at least this story ends with a happy ending! That’s nice.

This is a delightful tale. The whole adventure that Gabrielle took through 4000 was so fun, and I really adore the short comic at the end, it was a very satisfying conclusion and I liked how it ended with a happy ending compared to the other, more tragic entries in this storyline. Well done.

SCP-4000 already shows us that for somebody trained in it, it's possible to fall on the wrong side of the rules. This puts that up to eleven by showing a child in the same situation and so much less prepared for it, making the horror of it (even with a comparatively well-meaning Fae) a lot more apparent. +1

blast! blast!!!

This is good! I think it's a little weaker than the other entries, primarily because of pacing reasons — while the character work here is impeccable and I'm deeply fond of the Gawain myth, I think the article doesn't really kick up until day five of the seven-day structure. What's before that is valuable and important setup, it's back-heavy in terms of narrative movement and plot, and it ends up feeling like we see very little happen and then very much happen. It's not a major issue, and it certainly didn't demolish the piece or anything, but I think it could afford to be flattened out a little bit and make for a smoother reading experience.

I do appreciate the slightly more upbeat ending of this one! It's a nice breakup to the tragedyfest so far but it's still matched with that same quality prose and character work. We love seeing these kids and the prose matches the nostalgia and everything else I've already praised and oh god I have seven minutes left and it's really just fantastic. Immensely charming and a wonderful reinterpretation of one of the weirdest myths in the mythos packed with strong imagery and ambiguous themes you work really well to suit the idea that we make ourselves heroes. It's good.

Absolutely delightful read. Very interesting look at Gabrielle, and an amazing insight into how 4000 would feel to a mostly normal person.
