This is a prequel to my other work in Now, the Serpent, I'm firmly in the "only tell the interesting parts of your characters' lives" school of writing, but after thinking for a while I decided this origin story would be worth telling. I'm thinking I'll need one more story to fill in the gap between this and More Cunning Than Any Beast.
The version of EURTEC is specifically taken from Cauchynambour's EMBARGO canon from the French Branch, it's a fascinating piece of worldbuilding that I'd recommend anyone interested in EURTEC read - even if you don't embrace all of it, there's a lot of fascinating dystopian worldbuilding, and I definitely like the idea of the Silicon Nornir as the anti-Maxwellians. Thanks Cauchy for reading this, writing for INT canons is a lot of fun!
This was interesting to write because while it isn't quite about being transgender, that felt like an inseperable part of the story, I guess the setting aside of the old name in favor of the new is a reference to that. I'm unsure why Circe's character resonates so much with me, but she allows me to explore things I find at least philosophically interesting. She's not intended to be particularly representative of all trans people, but I have tried to base her on real people as much as I can.
