This is a long overdue monster of a tale from the first days after Alpha-Nine's approval, finally leaving my sandbox for the light of day. Clef, thedeadlymoose, and Cimmerian all wrote scenes and did heavy editing for this, and I think some other people helped edit as well (let me know if you were one, or if you wrote things and I forgot!)
A question about Alpha-9 at this point in the series…
"I don't mean to complain, but… between all of us, we requested access to over two hundred SCP items. Our list now is… Do we even have half a dozen? Besides Iris, we have Cain, a broken reality bender, a severed hand…"
This seemed like another manipulation, even if Light herself was genuine. They'd manipulated Able, too, given him control over the makeup of the Omega-7 strike team, let him strut around Site-17, indulged his homicidal desires, so long as he was useful…
This tale makes more clear, something that I've been wondering about … they've only got a handful of candidates lined up and are still actively looking for more. My question is: What criteria are being used (in-universe / out of universe) for inclusion? My headcanon has them evaluating, for sapient SCPs:
- Meeting criteria for Field Agent training - Psych profile, Physical Stamina, Intelligence etc.
- Anomalous trait(s) can be classed as 'Ability' - stable, operate under well-understood limits, under active, conscious control
- The object possesses 'Abilities' of sufficient operational benefit to warrant field use
- Loyalty to / affiliation with the Foundation and its mission
- Does not present an excessive threat (to team members, the Foundation, normalcy, Humanity or Reality) in the event of loss or breach of control
But maybe right now they can't be so selective and they're taking what scraps they can get? I figured that Iris would push back sooner or later, and based on her experience with Omega-7, she'd insist on more input into the vetting process - is that something that may come up in later installments?
I liked so much of this, from the Iris and Cain encounter (which actually made me shed a tear) to the last part with a more vivid representation of a Site.
This tale alone moved the plot a lot further that several previous tales combined, to me.
+1
I love the idea of remaking task force omega 7, but the new alpha 9 just seem so weak, I understand they don't want Able in the team again since he is pretty much a monster not just physically but also mentally. But he did turned soldiers into warriors. Yeah so that's what was missing, soldiers trained to the point of being super soldiers by a monster. And also such a shame about agent Andrews, the only guy Able gave special treatment for being an intellect. Sorry just had to say it :)

This really isn't how you train soldiers to become super soldiers, though.
Separately from that, the lack of an Able will certainly be addressed. :)
