The biggest problem I've had with the adventures of Kappa-10 is that everyone follows such well-trodden character beats that it's impossible to be surprised by the characters at all.

This is no different. Grape's backstory is absolutely laden with cliches, from playing games with a rogue AI to hiding a heart of gold under his vitriolic attitude to being blood brothers with the group's Snake Eyes. I actually rolled my eyes at several points.

But it's also damn well presented and fun to read.

You could have used something other than the most famous chess game of all time. Especially considering that no computer would play like either the white or black side in that game.

These aren't "computers" they are AIs. As for the chess reference I have two reasons for choosing that game in particular. One: I actually thought chess folk would get a kick of out knowing it when most other folk would not. Two: It's called the Immortal Game…

My point still stands. White had many easier, faster, and safer ways to win, and black just played badly.

I was a tad confused at first, because I was expecting a continuation of Hello, World, but in the end, I had an enjoy regardless. I love 8-Ball. :D

Echoing others on cliché-ness of plot elements and characters. 8-ball continues to be my standout favorite. Some parts are fine, but some things that could be more interesting (like, what an AI's perspective would be when hacking/fighting other AIs) are forsaken for things that, paradoxically, seem more limiting (simulspace in other tales, the game thing in this one).

Visually pleasing, but predictability makes it a slog to read.

+1, as I enjoyed it.

It did cause some frustration, though. The implication that he'd killed somebody made me think I'd missed something important in the "main" (mtf2016) storyline, and I had to dig around a while and read one that I'd missed before I came back. I just assume he'd killed Hatbot or Thorne.

It's only annoying because of the timing rather than the actual quality of the peice, but it was annoying.

Damn. I did not know they made AI's so salty these days.

Overall I felt this was an enjoyable read, and had a lot less moments I cringed at then the Hello World installments. Maybe that is due to the lack of a certain fedora wearing AI. It was also interesting to see Kappa-10 and Mu-4 working together, as I feel that dynamic has a lot of potential should you or anyone else choose to pursue expanding on the relationship

Okay, now that the Hello World sequence is complete, I feel more comfortable reading this one.

Which leads to the question, when exactly does this fit into the timeline established by Hello World? Because unless I'm misunderstanding something, this MTF wasn't formed until the express purpose of reacting to the Maxwellist thing, which and then they events of Hello World happened pretty much immediately before culminating in such a way as to preclude the presence of one of the characters presented here¹.

I like this story, but I'm confused by the timeline.

Ok. So the note I should make here is that Hello World is simply the introduction to Kappa-10. These contest tales are not the only stories that exist about these characters… both this and Rogue AI are after Hello World and 2522 in the timeline. How far after? That's not settled yet.

Because the story of how 8-Ball comes back or if this is even the same 8-Ball… isn't written yet. But given that this story exists… somehow or someway, he does come back.
