Can't think of anything else to say. If you don't know what Battletech is, it's a tabletop sci-fi wargame.
Wait, I can do forum signatures?

I was recently gifted a Battletech beginner box. I have no idea what it really is or how to play it. Any website channel or area you would recommend so that I can learn and try it out?
They have a wiki, Sarna.net, and there are a few channels with stuff about it, my favorite is Tex Talks Battletech. TvTropes also has a pretty informative article.

Alright I'll check those out and see if I'm interested. Thanks!
You are welcome!
Wait, I can do forum signatures?
Battletech is the proof that plagiarism is fine as long as you made enough money
That was resolved long ago. And it wasn't to make money.
Wait, I can do forum signatures?
It is, that's how it started. And it's "resolved" by just stop using the stolen assets instead of do it properly. Agains, just proved that plagiarism is ok as long as you made enough money out of it.
There's a lot of nuance to the whole Macross situation, but: FASA Corp, the original makers of BattleTech, thought they'd bought the license to Macross and a few other mecha franchises in the 80's and got into a legal feud with Harmony Gold when it transpired they'd actually gotten the rights and combined them into Robotech. The current edition of BattleTech has had all of the copyrighted Mechs redesigned so they don't violate copyright.
Also I wouldn't say that they made enough money, the original company behind BattleTech is long gone, and it's a new company which has taken steps to resolve the legal issues.
See? The only thing you're concern with is Macross, which is own by Harmony Gold and thus cost them money. My main concern is Dougram which has no footing in the west. And so you don't mind since it doesn't cost them money by itself.
Alright, guess I used the wrong words. It proved that plagiarism is ok as long as you made profit out of it.
The reason I chose to mention Macross is because it’s the most well-known of the rights issues surrounding BattleTech. And, no, I did not endorse plagiarism - what occurred was not plagiarism. FASA bought the rights to use various mecha designs in the early 80’s, giving them license to use them in their games, but it turned out the company who sold them the rights didn’t actually have the ability to do so. It wasn’t just Macross that FASA bought, but that was what landed them in legal trouble. Producing product when you have bought a license to do so doesn’t constitute plagiarism, and that’s not what occurred with BattleTech.
…bonjour.
First time checking the forums in ten years and I see a Battletech post??
I've been into Battletech through the games since I was twelve, and have been obsessively buying as many of the minis as I can for the past year. I got into it right after FASA discontinued the tabletop game and have always been obsessed with miniatures, so it's a literal dream come true to finally have a Timber Wolf physically on my desk.
I guess there's not a lot else I can say? I was surprised at how much the setting has influenced me as a writer when I revisited it. The entire idea of technological and societal regression due to advanced warfare really made an impression on young me, and the dichotomy of tech loss and giant stomping Mechs was the cherry on top of a beautifully made cake.
