Over the past while there has been a major problem with deletions piling up. This proposal aims to streamline the whole process by allowing non moderators to engage is the most tedious parts of the process.

This will be accomplished by some changes to processes and tagging.

When an article hits -10 the deletion-range tag will be applied instead of the in-deletion tag. After that the old procedure applies, requiring 3 OS+ votes and the 24 hour timer to expire.

Once an article has an expired timer, 3 staff votes and is below -10, any JS+ member of staff can make the post on the deletions thread and send the deletions PM. After they have done this the deletion-range tag can be replaced with deleteable tag.

Once this has happened the article can be deleted by any mod, even if it rises over -10.

Some thoughts of mine on review:

I guess I'm not really sure what the change of tag name is really supposed to accomplish here, given that in everything but tag name this step of the process stays the same. Additionally, this doesn't even address what was always the issue of this step when I was running deletions: Namely, always having to remind or grab OS to post on deletions threads rather than them doing it themselves. Perhaps this has changed in my retirement?

When I was running deletions this was a step I did myself most of the time. IIRC, after I retired, this was a task that was done by OS+. Now it looks like you are planning on… kicking the can down the road to JS? Which, sure, if you have eager JS they may be able to do this for a while. I feel that you are probably going to run into the same problem though, just one level down.

Feel like this will be the same issue as always, ie a shortage of mods wanting to do this step regardless.

Maybe this method will help, but I think my skepticism is well-earned. I often couldn't get people to cover me for deletions when I went on vacation for a week, let alone people stepping up long-term. Unfortunately, I don't really have a good solution for that problem myself, either.

The rising over -10 again yet still being able to get deleted needs to go.

I am pretty sure this happened to an contest entry once that then came back hard

In all of these cases, it rose above -10 before the timer expired.

If it comes back from -10 then it does not need to be deleted. That is the treshhold and it ain't there/under it anymore.

Everything else about this is great but this is a great rework for how many people can do deletions etc. because we need it.

TO QUOTE THE RULES:

If a page’s rating rises above -10, all Staff votes for deletion prior to this are voided. Should it fall again, voting for deletion must begin anew.

This doesn't state anything about the timers. I recommend making a separate discussion/O5 post about this/about adding a timer to it but I'd rather not since if an article comes back from the minimum it imo gets to stay.

Edit: Also hypothetically if a contest entry like that was like at -11 for 25 hours or something and then came back/was beginning to come back and was at like +4 or something, do you genuinely still delete it? Drafts and users do not deserve to get their (barely) surviving work deleted because someone didn't have the time to do so before.

I am very uncomfortable

I personally think it's unfair to other deleted entries if one stays up. Everyone gets the same chance with the 24 hours grace period. It's unfair if one entry gets more chance of survival just because a mod didn't have time.

I am of the simple belief that if it ain't -10, it ain't deletable (unless rulebreaking content)

I do not think it should be held against staff should it happen to rise out of the range after the 24h but I would not feel ok with deleting something that is at the moment of deletion above the treshhold

See the thing is that has literally never happened in the 12 years the site has been active.

If this had ever happened I would not have proposed the rule.

I am a tad confused as to how this streamlines the process. I am very unaware of how deletions work, so this thought could just be due to ignorance. But what would adding additional tags do to lower the workload here? Or to be more specific what aspects of the deletion process will change?

Is this all just to allow JS and above to be able to do the deletion posts and PM's? Honestly I always assumed that would have been one of the less tedious parts, knowing it mostly just takes copy and pasting a bit.

I'd also like to support Conwell's post as he definitely has a lot of experience with that aspect of the site.
