In a cold and uncaring universe, there will be a hundred ways it can break your spirit, a thousand ways you can remedy it, and a million more ways it can break you further.

Never in a million years did I think that I’d be invited to a project like this, surrounded by so many incredibly talented authors while I’ve just barely managed to stick my nose into the community. It is both an honor and ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING, but now that it’s done and posted, I am entirely glad to have taken part. It has been a wondrous ride like no other, and I hope my post lives up to the expectations this incredible project has drummed up so far. Thanks for reading :)

First and foremost, absolute massive thanks to Fishish, Jack Waltz, LORDXVNV, Placeholder McD, S D Locke, swordlover87, and Uncle Nicolini for helping me truly hammer out all of the kinks in the final draft! Each and every one of you five are responsible for helping me truly turn this into something I am entirely proud of. I could not have truly finished this without y’all.

Further thanks to Captain Kirby who I burdened with critiquing the outline of my scp. Yes, I forced someone to crit my outline. It is a sin I will not commit twice. I am very sorry dear Kirby, it won’t happen again.

And of course, thanks to all my pre-post readers, whose general thoughts and minor suggestions helped fix up what little the aforementioned critters missed. Thank you DrApricus, Guaire, Mimir The Mimirable, Ruskied, and, last-but-not-least, syuzhet.

This is a fucking terrifying article and probably my favorite anthology so far. The concept is so unsettling and the execution drives it home. God knows why this is so terrifying for me but there’s just something about this that is special. The characterization is something else and it was just an honor to be able to toss my hat into the ring and help out however I could during the drafting phrase.

Emphatic upvote.

Gut-wrenching isn't enough to describe my experience reading this. You really know how to torture a child, and your reader by proxy.

Hm. I'm conflicted. On one hand, the writing is good, and both the concept and the way it ends are pretty good, but it's so long. Now, of course, it isn't long per se, but for the type of content you're playing with, the length really tired me. The concept is really impactful, and up to the lightning, the impact was there, but with each new iteration of the same concept, the impact began diminishing, until I can't really say I cared about either the child or the doctor by the end. Mirroring life, torture works up until the person becomes numb to it, and I as a reader I got tired around the infohazard bit. I mean, "47 pulverized bones, 35 inverted organs, rotation of the torso, oculi combustion and brain liquidation." This is absurd. It's so over the top I can't find it horrifying. It's kinda funny even, and this kinda broke my immersion, cuz I couldn't get back into the vibe I was feeling before then. It also made the researcher's words feel odd-paced, though I can't really pinpoint why.

Overall, an amazing start and a good ending, but the middle is too long to keep the flow of the impact of the concept going, making it fizzle about. I don't think it's bad: It's really well written, rather, but it certainly wasn't something I personally enjoyed. Novote.

i'm not sure that the use of the department of surrealistics really makes sense here.

i find this fascinating, because i think it works better as a character study of researcher larson than of mia herself. the article maintains a clinical sort of distance from mia throughout that sort of reminds me of 231, which dilutes the emotional impact of her suffering somewhat. larson, on the other hand, is able to convey her changing feelings directly to the reader through her notes, and her emotions are felt more strongly as a result. i found her emotional arc more compelling than mia's, especially during the moments when she has very little to say.

the things happening to mia herself didn't do a whole lot for me. at this point, i've read about so many fictional children being subject to horrible things on this website that i've become desensitized to it. larson's arc, however, is well-paced and affecting.

This didn't feel long at all and Mia's torture at the hands of the universe was so fucking gut wrenching with her only source of escape being removal from existence(which we'll never know if it worked or not).

I wil nitpick a little bit and say I would mention she reverts back to 12 years old from 13 because I thought she was de aging every year from 12 to 11 etc.

Other than that, well fucking done
