I dug this. I don't have enough insight into the various references (and besides generally maintain that works should stand on their own), but I thought that this was enjoyable. Like Pedantique said, it conveyed slapstick comedy and even some absurdism quite well in a medium that is very poorly suited for it.
It's also just a very fun, easy read. Even though it was primarily incident reports and interviews, it never felt like a slog.
I enjoyed this, and thought that it succeeded on its own terms, and for that, I give it a +1.
