This article wasn't originally written for this kcon. I had the idea back in April- two civilizations from different planets meet, and as they get closer in a metaphorical sense so do their worlds in a literal sense. I got up to the log with the handshake, and hit a wall. With no idea how to finish, I stopped writing and focused on other things.

7k rolled around, and I was stuck for an idea. Then I realized that a central theme in this article is luck. Being lucky to meet someone, being lucky to live where you do, and being horribly unlucky to have to say goodbye to someone you care about. With that in mind, I set out to write. Knowing that Avalon was thematically similar to what I wanted to do, I took a look at how its logs were styled and went from there.

I know there's similarities, but I believe this stands on its own. I am beyond proud of what this became, and I hope you all enjoyed your read. Even if I don't win, as long as you come away from this thinking or feeling something I believe I have succeeded.

EDIT: So here we are huh? After an intense war between 4th-6th place for most of the con, I somehow wound up with SCP-7999. I joined this site around a year an a half ago after 12 years of being too afraid to, scared to share my ideas and stories with the world. Never would I have imagined that anything of mine, let alone something that's honestly pretty personal for me, would be this successful on the site or placed in a slot of historical importance.

When I joined this site in May of 2021 I never expected anything of mine to amount to… uh.. anything really? I was expecting to be a +20 average author who just kinda existed. To have a work of mine hit +500 is absolutely mindboggling to me, so I am absolutely thrilled to hit that number.

Maybe we can meet the Keradids again someday.

Holy shit yes please. The concepts for the Keradids and Nest work so well. I can feel the background work put into this story and it pays off so well. I also appreciate using the SCP format for not only 'here is a big bad monster that is cool' but to articulate a beautiful story.

This is an amazing example of the art form that is the Foundation.

Amazing job dude! Seriously, I'm really happy that you got so much praise for writing this article. It's been so many years since I came back to this site and MY LORD is it different dude (like, holy crap, the website has so much more to offer when it concerns articles now, I don't even know where to begin and where to end) either way, I wanted to see what the "latest" (last article) was at the moment. And it was yours, and I'll be honest with you man, I was legitametely impressed by the story you wrote, I loved the idea of there being an event such as this one, in which two worlds in both figurative AND literal terms collide. Leading up to such a beautiful, yet tragic idea of how life and relationships as a whole can be at times. Needless to say, I loved it lol; the only thing that I would recommend some work on would be your use and implementation of prose when it concerns the dialogue of characters, I couldn't help but notice that when it concerned character dialogue it felt a bit clunky and unrefined. Leading up to the dialogue having a far; lesser, role than it could have had. I wish to reiterate that I am not trying to insult you in any way, this is simply a critique of the article itself. Other than that, I LOVED the originality, exceptional depth, and vivid detail that you but into the article. I hope that you continue to write more stories my good sir! Also, it's understandable to feel as though the theme that you chose to use, and the way that you presented it would make some feel as though you were being unoriginal. But I would argue that it very much stands on it's own, even if a story borrows elements from other pieces of literature (such as Avalon in this case) I still believe that the context, content and characters themselves make the story as a whole quite distinct, and variable from the other works of literature that you may have taken inspiration form as well. So yeah, awesome article dude, nice work.

Edit: Oh yeah, also, the way that you presented the idea of an intelligent species, just similar enough to us to the extent that we could communicate with them, yet still so different in many ways was just amazing to me. I loved the way you showed the idea of a relationship between two different societies so distant yet so close to one another in many different ways. To the extent that in the end it was gutwrenching to see the ending of it all. Very melancholic indeed, beautiful.

Touching, heartwarming and then gutwrenching - I’m a massive fan of this piece. The characterization is solid and really endears us to everyone involved, which makes the rug pull at the end all the more heartbreaking. This piece nails it’s atmosphere both in the exciting high notes and melancholy.

I was terrified to post this. I’ve never done a kcon before, so the idea of doing one at all was scary. Entering with something outside my normal style? Even more so. A really solid entry into the contest. The characterizatiom is really well done, making us like the characters in the short timeframe it takes to read the article. The melancholic atmosphere is likewise very effective and the ending made me genuinly sad. On the other hand the worldbuilding on the piece, makes me interested in learning more about the keradids.

In short, a solid +1 on my part.

Wow, what an awesome entry! Packed with emotion, great characterization (especially for Carteckan), and such a heartbreaking ending. I noticed a couple of SPaG errors, but it didn't really detract from the overall quality. I will gladly give this an upvote

Wonderful, beautiful and sad, I teared up at the end. Carteckan's dialogue was so full of character, I could really feel its wonder, this deep desire to not be alone finally fulfilled.

I read this while it was in the draft stages (though admittedly far along) and it was an experience I simply enjoyed. The article has an amazing through-line bolstered by wholesome interaction and amazing characterization that makes even the very melancholy, abrupt ending feel warm. The only regrettable part about this article is that there isn't more of it to enjoy.

The unfortunate comparisons to Avalon this will inevitably get aside, this really is a fantastic entry. From beautiful imagery to wonderful characterization and a poignant ending, it really is a masterful submission. Excellent work.

I agree. This was a beautiful and heartstring pulling article, I really was pulled in by the characters and the visuals. In the end I hope Carteckan and his people managed to find that one spark of hope.

The sincerity of this really hit me, and touched on just— the amazing luck of finding another intelligent species, one that through a sheer miracle has a mind similar enough to meaningfully communicate, to know one another.

Isn't that a lovely dream? Not being alone?

One of if not the best SCP story I've ever read.
You know that feeling when you read a book and you don't want the story to end?
