This is a pretty good take on the "death is suffering forever" formula. I probably wouldn’t like it as much if it weren’t for the implication that this thing is like a flytrap afterlife, capturing souls every so often for reasons unknown - and we have no idea where it came from.
Love it. Heartily enjoy the term "post-death ecosystem" and its implications. Now that I'm thinking about it a little more, it's actually quite calming. It's like the minds of the inhabitants are being decomposed and the nutrients (whatever they are) are harvested/recycled.

Based on a quick little google search, accounting in both the people who were born before the beginning of civilization and subtracting the amount of people alive today, about 15.4 billion people are currently stuck in this weird metaphysical flytrap.
I think this works for me, and there's just something neat about the concept that's executed really well by the imagery that's used.
I don't think that is right, it says 0.01% of deceased and around 100 billion people have died ever. That comes out to 10 million.
(account deleted)Well-delivered shortform, a lovely horrible suggestion of the afterlife. Particularly enjoy some of the word choices you've made here, like referring to inhabitants who have lost "mental coherency" as "spent".
