Forum Crit Recruitment Thread

Hey guys, welcome to the Forum Criticism Team recruitment thread! The Forum Criticism Team is the staff team dedicated to helping new and experienced writers alike receive feedback on their ideas and drafts using the on-site forums. The critique forums are the most active forums on the site, so there's a lot of work that goes into maintaining them and doing our best to ensure that everyone has a chance to get their ideas seen! Because of that, we want to reach out and find interested members of the community who would be willing to help us out! If you have a passion for giving feedback, this is the place to express your interest!

While Forum Crit is one team, we have multiple duties:

• Responding to threads in the Ideas Critique forum:
  • Ensuring that all concept threads follow the required reading template.
  • Providing critique on threads where the author has reached out to request feedback.
  • Addressing misleading, vague, vehement, or otherwise problematic feedback.
• Responding to threads in the Draft Critique forum:
  • Ensuring that sandbox links are used, and full draft text is not posted to the forums.
  • Ensuring that first-time authors provide evidence of greenlights upon seeking draft critique.
  • Addressing problematic feedback as noted above.
• Moderating the Writing Help forums:
  • Ensuring the forums are free of repeat threads and spam.
  • Responding to queries in the Questions Desk and Research and Resources forums.

Remember, our only purview is unpublished work, so you wouldn't be in charge of handling finished articles! While we don't demand that you be super active in both Ideas and Drafts Critique forums, we do ask that interested applicants are willing to give consistent, regular feedback.

We will be frequently checking this thread for any promising candidates. You will be contacted directly if you're accepted to the team! Please know that successful candidates will have demonstrated a level of existing activity in the forums.

Hello! I’m very much interested in joining forum crit.

1. IRC, Wikidot PM, Discord (RadiantGold#1730)
2. I would indeed be willing to join the butterfly squad.
3. I’ve provided critique both in the Idea Forum and within the #thecritters channel in the IRC, so I have experience in giving non-vehement, constructive criticism. I’m usually active through my entire day on IRC and frequent the wiki often, so I’ll be available for critique very often. I’ve also authored and co-authored a few articles of my own so I’m well aware of the process of ideating and writing one. As well, since I’m a relatively new and young writer, I believe I’ll be able to better connect and sympathise with some of the struggles or frustrations that new authors may have with the process or writing in general. I always do my best to try and look at the situation from the viewpoint of the critique-seeker to better connect with them and provide more useful critique.

2. No, although I wouldn’t be necessarily opposed to it if there was a need.

3. I have five articles published to the site, one of which recently broke +100, so I am generally familiar with the process of conceptualizing, drafting, and seeking critique. I’ve given critique to several users on various occasions, primarily over Discord, although I am acquainted with the greenlighting process and drafts forum policy. I visit the site frequently, and believe I’ll be able to perform the duties of a Forum Crit JS consistently and effectively if recruited.

2. I'm already a member of the Butterfly Squad :)

3. I have been frequently active on both the Idea Critique and Draft Critique Forums over the past several months, providing at least 2-3 critiques per day. In addition to this activity, I have participated in a Flight prior to joining the Butterflies (my captain(s) were Lobster_tail for the first half, and Zyn for the second half). Some aspects of Forum management were covered in the Flight, which gave me valuable insight into the responsibilities of Forum Moderation. I greatly enjoy helping both aspiring and veteran authors fine-tune their concepts and drafts. I believe that joining the Forum Criticism Team will allow me to both continue helping these authors, as well as keeping the Forums as well-maintained as possible.

3. I'll address the elephant in the room first; I've been inactive over the past few weeks due to a burn-out, though I intend to be back full time- or very close to full-time by May 1st.

Typically, I have a few spare hours a day that I'm able to dedicate to reviewing and/or moderation, I'm also in AEST, so I can be online during the quieter hours. I've reviewed both on the Forums and through IRC for nearly two years and am familiar with the greenlighting process, both from a reviewer's and an author's perspective. Helping to bring a concept into a fully-fledged article is something I've enjoyed since I joined, and having the chance to help to maintain the forums responsible for that process is something I'd be more than willing to commit to long term.

3. I've been a longtime lurker since 2015 and a member since early 2021. I am able to be frequently on IRC and provide real-time critique, including lengthy articles/concepts in need of greenlight if needed. I specialize in line-by-lines and character dialogue/development. I can spend a moderate (few hours) amount of time each day reviewing and even longer on IRC. I have both assisted and taken part in the greenlighting process and am very familiar with how it functions. I take great pride in refining characters and helping authors with the process of making genuine dialogue while also having compelling conversations. I consider myself easy to talk to for people seeking greenlights/reviews and am more than willing to assist in upkeeping the Writing Help forums!

Honestly, I've waffled on whether I should apply or not for a while now, and I think I ought to go ahead and put my hat in the ring. I love this community for the opportunity it provides to see people grow as writers, and I ought to do my part to contribute (not that you NEED to be in a position of authority to help out, but you get my point).

1. Wikidot PMs, discord (agi#5737), and IRC, though I'm not around there super frequently. I would probably try to be active there more often.

2. Actually, that's what brought me here. I saw that the butterfly squad roster was looking a bit thin and figured I'd offer my services. So yes, I'd love to be on the butterfly squad.

3. While I haven't been terribly active on the forums for a bit (minus a recent handful of posts), I do often find myself holding back from responding to threads because I figure it should be left to forum staff. Usually, it's in the case of common new user mistakes like double posting instead of editing their previous post. I really enjoy offering help and insight where I can. For what it's worth, I consider myself to be a fairly strong reviewer when it comes to things like SPaG and phrasing. My mother and grandmother were both English teachers. I took a very essay-intensive program in high school and have continued to take writing-heavy courses in college. I'm really not one to call myself good at something unless I have a strong reason to do so, but I think I have what it takes to help out here.

3. I have enjoyed and been fascinated with SCPs for a while. I enjoy reading articles and seeing the thousands of different ideas people come up with. I've also come up with a few ideas of my own. I haven't posted any articles but I am working on some and I've learned a lot from the critique forums. I enjoy reading and like storytelling. I am very active and plan to start joining the IRC chatroom more. I have a good bit of free time to review and work on the site.

3. As an outside author who has just discovered the Foundation. I believe that my being a new member could help to bring some extra outside ideas that would otherwise not be proposed because it does not fit with the lore of the Foundation. I also believe that my experience as an author will help me in providing constructive feedback to my fellow authors here on the Foundation Site.

3: I've successfully completed a Butterfly Flight (Plague was actually my partner iirc), and I have a history of being pretty active in the Idea forums, Draft forums, and site crit. I try my best to give polite feedback to everyone, and I'd like to think I do a pretty good job of offering solutions to the problems I see.

I've recently come back from a several month hiatus, but I can assure you I won't make a habit of taking these if on J-staff.
