When I initially started this draft, it was meant to be an homage to the ADMONITION Series. While I still don't know how the team found my wip sandbox, I am immensely grateful they did!
Getting to work with Placeholder McD and
Azamo has been wonderful, and it's allowed this to grow into a far cooler work than I ever imagined it could be. I'm hugely grateful to them and the other people working on the series.
I hope you enjoy this. There's some really exciting things ahead.
[Spoilers & Easter Eggs to come]
For some artwork inspired by the final section, check out the "SCP-6659: METAGNOSTIC" tab of Dodo's Arts and Crafts Corner!
I'm usually a sucker for these high concept articles, but I didn't really get this one. This appears to be more like Tactical Positivism instead of Theology.
brilliant work, couldn't stop reading it. Genuinely loved every second of it. Really built up the tension and balanced active story telling with exposition quite well. One of the few "the researcher decides to go do whatever anyway" tropes in articles that I can safely say felt justified and interesting, and the resulting damage to people's minds/the "creation" or "discovery" of something else out there looking for worshipers, was chilling. I especially like the resultant counter program, the Foundation making a god of humanity essentially.
for all the talk of the noosphere and deific whatsit, it all read really grounded and understandable… especially liked the one researcher having been a reverend, so that gives him something of a personal stake in it all
The last bit from Place really works as a come to jesus moment, like you could have leaned into super technical and theoretical language but that probably would have killed the pacing, the way it is feels really smooth. A very down to earth, here’s the fucking problem, without feeling too expository.
And that last line, super haunting.
Now, I understand this is a Fifthist thing, but I don’t see that too much (probably because my experience with that GOI is super limited)… but I don’t think that detracts at all, this could stand on its own without another hotlink and be a solid piece of fiction.
This is fantastic. It takes all the best parts of 6699 and mushes them with that placeholdery, azamo-y goodness. It helps that I'm a sucker for antimemetics, but when I got to the line
THE WILL OF వ
I had a dumb grin on my face that didn't go away until the end of the article. Grigori mentions above " this could stand on its own without another hotlink and be a solid piece of fiction." and I totally agree - in fact, the choice not to crosslink 3125 or anything fithist/qntm antimemetics was an inspired one that really works for the piece - it really sells the sense of "this is something outside of comprehension that the Foundation has no clue about". Dodo's images are fantastic as ever and as always the presentation is top tier. I could go on, but this is one of my favourite articles I've read in a while.
This is what I want these Admonition articles to be more like. Foregoing much of the fluff & whittling it down to something more direct, the article taps into a very powerful & emotional feeling of Gods, religion, & how we perceive & interact with them. It almost feels like a copout to "explicitly" tell us what SCP-055 is, but by the end of the article, it actually starts to make sense. I would say it provides nearly the entire meaning behind the article on its own, which enables the reader to really dig into these themes & explore what it means to worship, to have faith, & to believe. I have no idea if this article was meant to be terrifying, but in a sense, I found it to be quite beautiful.
I cannot upvote it, however. The CSS this canon uses will consistently clash with my tastes & aesthetics. It looks pretty, it's very well-designed, but it distracts more than it helps. It looks the best here compared to the other two, but that isn't a high bar to clear. Like the other articles, I feel there is fluff here, primarily in the form of Project Prometheum. It is a logical step forward from Ø-E5/B-II, but do we really need it to be spelled out for us so explicitly? The implications were well-laid & spread throughout in the prior addena. There isn't much need to then be explicit about it. The last line in this article is honestly pretty good. But "There is nothing else." is way better at summarizing the themes of this article; why do we need the rest, thematically speaking? & given all of this, the quotation from John Blake at the start of the article really does it no favors. It looks cool, but it isn't needed, because you lay out the themes of the article much better afterwards. It feels entirely unnecessary, narratively or thematically. Considering you literally start out the description with "SCP-6659 is a Foundation-designed eigenweapon developed for the neutralization of hostile deific entities.", why even have the wall of text prior to that? It could be cut with nothing lost.
Great job on the article. I enjoy ruminations on religion & its relationship with the self, particularly when it isn't nihilistic or self-defeating, which this article cleverly avoids.
This is my favourite Admonition article by far. The way you manage to mix philosophical and theological ideas (such as the limits of human knowledge, the nature of Gods, the relationship between the physical brain and the mind, etc.) with a compelling story is extremely impressive. The sheer amount of SCP lore elements you've included without it feeling unnatural really cements the article in the SCPverse. The characterisation is on point too, I can't find anything I would change. I'd liked to see this subject matter explored more on the wiki. (already thinking of tale ideas :P)
I also appreciate the presentation of exposition in this article. In Chaos Theory, I thought some of the more technical explanations damaged the pacing and didn't further the plot all that much. But here, even the more difficult to understand parts were enjoyable to figure my way through; the writing wasn't too dense and it felt as though a lot of thought was put into how effectively the information could be conveyed.
As always, the CSS is beautiful and Dodo hits it out of the park with the image work. The unique colour schemes and styles of these articles is so refreshing compared to the normal sigma9/BHL layout.
This article is a monumental achievement, well done to the team. Admonition is one of the most interesting things to come out of the wiki in recent memory, and I'm eagerly looking forward to the next one.
Ooh. what Is this?
Solamente me gusta contribuir. 🫀
My question is, does this article tie in with the other three making a huge super plot that ends with a denouement?
