I'm a huge fan of folklore. Folklore is one of those fundamental aspects of human culture, and we even have our own unique folklore here in the states. One of those folkloric legends is the Fearsome Critters, a mess of seemingly impossible animals that natives told to Westward Expansionists with the idea of scaring them away from the unknown and unexplored regions of the Western US. These included the well known Jackalope and lesser known creatures like the Squonk. This is my letter to them- a piece that suggests that maybe they weren't so fake after all

I think your one of the only people I've seen online who knows about the Squonk. I really love the take that all these mythic creatures are just animals that had gone extinct by either Human actions, or Davenson. I assume that's what the article is saying?

SCP-6968-2-B: No Idea, but I feel like I know this one.

SCP-6968-2-C: jackalopes (Not much if a guess, I know. They're mentioned by name)

SCP-6968-2-D: Lil' Squonk

SCP-6968-2-E: Crocotta?

SCP-6968-2-F: I don't think I know this one. It isn't the one that crawls inside large river animals and eats then inside out?

I think I got most of these wrong, as they're based on American Folklore, aren't they? Regardless, this is a really cool SCP.

Not too bad, but not quite!

-A is the Ball-Tailed Cat

-B is the Hugag

-C is a bunch of Jackalopes

-D is the Squonk

-E is the Wampus Cat

-F is the Fur Bearing Trout

Some of these are really esoteric, so I'm not surprised they're not familiar. One of my hopes here was that this would inspire people to look the critters up!

I recognise Wampus and Hugag! I've seen the Ball-Tailed Cat too, but I think I just assumed it was an interpretation of a manticore of some description. That Furry Trout is very cool.

So your post led me to this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fur-bearing_trout which was an engrossing read have your +1 wow good job mission accomplished that's some unusual lore right there. I'm still slightly befuddled by what I've read. Urban myth/legends are pretty crazy.

The wampus cat brought back some memories! I still remember being told that story at camp and almost peeing in bed because I was too afraid to get up.

Definitely could use some detail in the description. What are the inside of the tents like? Are there people inside? How is the Foundation able to recover these things so easily? Minor stuff you can infer, but it's always best to state it. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it! The Squonk poster is great, so big props to AMAB, it's seriously impressive.

This is an instance where I forget I like something. This is a folklore SCP, and I'm like: "Oh yeah! I like these types of entries!" This looks good! I hope we get more folklore SCPs in the future!

The idea is that the Fearsome Critters in actual Folklore only existed in areas where the Westward expansion was happening. I wanted to keep the show itself roughly in the areas where these things were supposed to have existed.

A wonderfully inventive presentation of some classic creatures. The description of the travelling exhibit is really neat, and the table of animals is well made. I think the dialogue is probably the article's weak point - it reads a little hammy at times, giving a little too much away. Nice job, anyway. I really enjoyed reading!

Also, wow, I had no clue that poster was original. It's stunning!

Thank you! I can agree on the dialogue- I don't think it's bad, but it's definitely one of the weaker aspects of this article because it just shows a bit too much of my hand. I tweaked it quite a bit in drafting but really wasn't able to completely get where I wanted it.

And thank you! I'm very proud of Amab for making such a great poster for me.
