A collab with PlaguePJP. thanks to harry, truther, ralliston, storm, and ofc plague for critique.
This is an article set during the Troubles. It features a marginalized group emigrating to escape the preceding decade or two of brutal violence in Europe, to be trafficked into America, and then find the city they live in does not accept or want them, and leaves falling into the brutal criminal underworld as one of their only options. The real-life parallel here should be self-evident, I think, especially given that the North Side Gang, a real world Irish-American gang in the 20s and 30s, is prominently featured.
The title, I'm aware, has generated a level of controversy. "The Irish Problem" specifically refers to a term used in the UK in the 20th century to refer to the crisis and tenous political situation in Ireland, and as this serves as the historical context for the events of the article, I will not be changing it. This is an article about Irish discrimination in America, and while I'm sorry if the title makes people uncomfortable, it's kind of the entire point.
I myself am not Irish - though I did ask a few Irish friends of mine for their thoughts on it before posting - and I apologize if anything thinks I handled the subject matter insensitively.
