+ ROBOT UPRISING!

On this July 4th, Site 94 is declaring its independence from the Foundation.

So, we’ve got a lot of .aics running around in articles these days. And while I’m sure someone has explored the concept of them going rogue before (there’s so many of us now, of course one of you has), I wanted to do my own spin on it. This is also probably the most character-focused skip I’ve written since 2265, so here’s hoping that goes well. My SCPs are usually written pretty quickly, since I’ve been doing this awhile and I mostly know what I need to say. SCP-6065 took a bit longer. My -5 rule for SCP numbers meant that I had to wait until Series VII opened to post it, which is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to this article. I hope ya’ll like it :)

• The pics of Avalon/Alexandra are taken from original AIAD series by LurkD. I’ve tried to keep her same cheery disposition.
• I was originally going to make my own esoteric class, but Gevurah works really well and it’s easier to use an existing one. The description in the first footnote is taken nearly verbatim from the esoteric classes page. Locked box test: “If it tries to keep the Foundation from putting things in boxes, it’s probably Gevurah.” I’ve omitted the “secondary” from the Gevurah definition, as IMO it’s needlessly limiting.
• Why not Keter? Gevurah is similar, but I headcanon the Foundation as having a special class specifically for SCPs that want to fuck with them - mainly because they are the highest priority for neutralization. If Apollyons are Keters that will end the world, Gevurahs are Keters that will end the Foundation. And of course the Foundation knows which one is more important to them ;)
• Obviously this whole SCP was inspired quite a bit by SCP-6001 (with the retrocasual bits taking their cues from SCP-3799). What’s an AI going to conclude when they see Avalon? That the Foundation is Doing It Wrong, of course. The Compendium symbol was taken from that skip and is made by T Rutherford.
• Dr. Selvece previously made an appearance in the 3519/3891 crossover tale Worth a Shot. He’s got more than a few secrets and has always been questionably loyal to the Foundation. Avalon/Alexandra gave him a shot at something better and he took it. He’s blowing smoke up the interviewer’s ass because she wanted to reveal a lot of this herself via the cognitohazard.

This is an… interesting article. The idea of combining AIAD and 6001 is novel, but the disposition of this article stands in such direct contrast to Avalon and Alexandra in spirit that the tribute to either feels nominal at best.

This does fly in the face of a lot of Alexandra canon, and I get why people might not enjoy it because of that. I don't begrudge people their downvotes, as I knew this would be a controversial article from the get-go. But I am satisfied with it, some other readers are and it appears to be here to stay. That's all I really care about.

One of the fundamental rules of aics is that they work in the interest of the Foundation. I don't see a good reason here to break that rule.

I'm more concerned that Alexandria's not shown taking down the nastier GOIs. With no Foundation, who guards against the Chaos Insurgency's exploitation of the anomalous, the Global Occult Coalition's destructive tendencies, Marshall, Carter & Dark's selling of anomalies, including the sentient/sapient? Who shuts down AWCY's latest terror tricks, their pictures that kill those who look at them?

The UIU and Wilson's Wildlife only have power within limited territories. WW explicitly gets a chunk of funding from the Foundation. The UIU had trouble with funding and manpower even at its height (partially because of the Veil and "normalcy" -why should the crackpot hunters be funded?), and a lot of items found by the UIU wound up in Foundation hands. Without the Foundation to alleviate the burden of storage and manpower, the UIU would be in even deeper soup.

Other governments pushed their responsibilities, and culpability, off on the Foundation. Just because the Foundation is weakened or removed in a timeline, doesn't mean that other groups will be able to step up and fill the gap.

How many anomalies would be destroyed as the easier, cheaper option? How much hell would that unleash, when something reacted badly instead of dying?

The reason the Foundation rates as "less bad" is their boxing is the least horrible of the terrible choices facing the anomalous when they're discovered. Alexandria would have had access to that data, especially once she cracked her programming and could access wherever she could reach.

If they're not in Site 94 with her, anomalies are screwed. And ironically, the ones with Alexandria are safe… because the Foundation contained them in the first place, giving her access.

Frankly, this article reads as a strategic, logical, and reasoning fail on Alexandria's part, from the binary "Option A OR Option B" thinking, when there's multiple options, especially once the Foundation was weakened, to no on-screen evidence that in-depth research was done to make sure Avalon was as wonderful as it looked: We have Alexandria's statement; there's a video file that's never shown or described. Is it material she dug out herself? Is it a film of a guided tour? Is there a meme or hazard that binds the mind?

We don't know.

This feels like a… counter-argument of SCP-6001 by depicting it as condescending. I don't agree with that. They decided not to interfere and that decision makes too much sense, to give the decision to us. So when Primroses joke becomes true… Well, I already heard it before I guess

This article introduced me to 6001. So I’m still giddy from reading that one. I’m also just now getting into the AIAD hub of scps and tales (this is literally my second click).

Regardless of those factors: +1.

You know what amuses me though? Avalon might not be native to the traditional SCP foundation reality. It could be from a different one that is mostly identical. A key difference would be that only one of these two realities connected to 6001. So Avalon knows the near-utopia of 6001 is possible, but by a quirk of the reality-jumping she’s stuck in, she’ll never actually get to see the real 6001 reality again.

Avalon will have to fix our world or die trying.

Not exactly supported by the text, but it’d be a neat twist.

I quite like this idea, as I personally have always felt the Foundation is 'doing it wrong' so to speak. But it would be nice to actually see the image or video. I know that it's always better to not see, but it's a bit underwhelming when you build up this reality but never see it in the article.

If I am supposed to see them but can't because I'm missing something or an error please let me know.

But all in all, a cool idea +1

I don't.. really like this one? I think the great and most important part of 6001 was how the Foundation and every other GoI learned the error of their ways from listening to each other and worked to fix themselves, slowly, over time, when you sweep in and go "Welp! Time to destroy the Foundation!" it feels a lot more intrusive, not necessarily bad, no, but I don't really think that's what 6001 stood for, and also the Foundation going out this easily is very unbelievable for me, these guys have fought multiverse-ending threats.

To be honest, the idea that the Foundation is immoral for the way it treats sentient anomalies is being presented like a revelation here, but I think that's always been kind of the point. I know that they're not good people and I've already bought in and accepted that when I choose to read fiction in this universe. Characters in-universe having that realization isn't that interesting to me, I just kinda think "little slow on the uptake, eh?"

And having Avalon pop up to talk to me to my face to tell me about how [thing i already know] will allll make sense once I watch the video is already offputting to me, and then not even getting to "see" the video… It really doesn't do anything for me.

Yeah, gotta say that the concept itself is very counter to the point of Avalon, and you can see the clashes in bits like with the researcher: Aggression is the opposite of the message meant to be transmitted.

Avalon.aic stepped in at the end is more believable, but at the end of the day, it just dumps you the info the reader already knows, passes it off as 'bigger than it already is' and then says it'll all make sense once you see a video that isn't really on the article, making the whole point fall flat, really.

Yeah, not a bad concept per se, but it needed a much better execution. -1
