To those of you who gave me critique, thank you for helping me bring this story to its full potential!
I'm having a little bit of trouble figuring out how this box is supposed to work. Lemme know if I got this right.
You wrote that it generates an identical mirror reality while consuming the original one, which means the two universes are not only virtually the same, but after the box is used the only one remaining is the copy. Then you wrote that the box can appear at any time and location within the mirror universe. So effectively, it's it a device that goes back in time to give a warning?
I really like this concept — there's some super cool potential here. What I was expecting was following a daisy-chain of previous universes and the documents which came from each one; maybe eventually discovering that the mirror replication isn't exact, and that the future universes have slight differences, as indicated by conflicting iterations of the same document. How does this impact the value of information passed on by 5518? How does the Foundation interact with this knowledge?
You've set up a fantastic premise, then tied it into a bow and abandoned it. I'm tempted to upvote this on strength of concept alone, but you don't explore its implications enough to be satisfying to me. Yes, it's realistic that the Foundation would have the reasoning it does for preventing use of the box, but there are other ways to have the box get used. Maybe there's a log of people trying to steal and use it? Maybe some of those times it was successful? How would you be able to tell?
For now, +-0. Please, do not abandon this concept. If you'd like help with a rewrite, pm me.
I wholly agree with Placeholder McD on this one. The article has some great potential, but it feels too weak right now. Because I think it could be much better with the same base, I'm -1'ing and hope you can go back and improve upon this.
Agreeing with Savanac, who agrees with
Placeholder McD.
In other news, how long can this go on.
bloop
I can't see my previous post in this thread, so I am assuming that wikidot has either deleted it, or it didn't post. What I said in it was that the concept was good, and I hope you keep working on it. It was just that the article felt a bit weak.
Additionally, I noticed there are many similarities to the Obsolete Laptop SCP in this.
Right now, I'm feeling a novote.
K. I can't see two though, so it's probably a problem with my internet, or something.
