The outdoors are a big part of my life, and when I saw that the theme was "Nature" for this contest, I knew that I wanted to write an ode to nature itself. Kings Canyon National Park is one of my favorite parks of all time, and I wanted to present this article as a sort of tour of the park itself, told through historical photos.

Due to my own schedule constraints, I was unable to obtain feedback on this article prior to submitting. However, as per usual, I must thank my spiritual writing guru, Riemann for being an invaluable voice in crafting some of the message, as well as for bouncing ideas back and forth when I was first outlining this idea a month ago. Many thanks.

+ Stray Observations

• The photos that I used for Theodore Lewis are actually of a real-life NPS ranger by the name of Washington B. "Dusty" Lewis, who did serve as a ranger for Yosemite in the late 1920s. You can read more about his life here.
• Almost all of the pictures I sourced are from the incredible gallery of photos at the Sequoia and Kings Canyon Digital Archive, which serves as a repository of historical, public domain photos of the park's history. Simply digging through these pictures and seeing the history of the park was an awesome experience in and of itself. You can find the link here.
• The cover photo is actually one that I took myself during a backpacking trip in Kings Canyon that I took one summer! This is the view of Paradise Valley that would have been seen at the end of the piece, in my mind.

This is wonderful. It’s haunting and poignant, and having spent a few summer camping trips in the Sequoias and Kings Canyon, I found it pleasantly nostalgic!

It’s compelling throughout, I often tell people not to make an article that’s all journal entries because it can be a real drag on the narrative but you’ve managed to make this very readable with a grand sense of both an slowly revealing mystery but also the sense of sadness that comes with devoting yourself entirely to a project.

I related to it very much, and that sense of feeling your troubles evaporate when spending time in the wilderness. It’s lovely.

If I'm being honest, a thing I take away from this article is more a familiar feeling than any concrete opinion, but the elicitation is enough for me to leave an upvote.

It would be accurate to say that the piece is mostly meant to elicit an emotion, as opposed to providing any concrete answers or sense of closure, so this is honestly right in line. Glad the feeling was positive!

This felt less like an SCP and more of a beautiful, familiar callback to summer afternoons spent in the wildnerness as a child. Of all the anomalies on this website, I think this is the one that I am most at peace with. +1

is the title a chris mccandless hat tip? if so, i love that. it would make sense; he went unprepared for the trip he was taking, too. at the end he decided he didn't want to die, but i honestly think that when he went in, he didn't care of he lived or died; he had to know the risks of going unprepared to a wild place. he didn't care until he was on the brink. which seems to be a theme. iirc, every single golden gate jump survivor (not that there are many) has said that they regretted their decision as soon as they jumped. which is a bit of a tangent. i really enjoyed reading this. +1

Good eye! It's a cross between the McCandless book and the general sentiment expressed by the John Muir quote I listed above.

Otherwise, I think you've absolutely nailed the exact theme that I was shooting for. I'm very glad it came across.

This SCP entry looks good! I've started skimming over some of the SCP-6000 concepts, and I quite like this one. It really fits the theme for a SCP-6000 entry!

Oh boy. This sure is something.

When I skimmed over the document, I realized this was gonna be different. Wasn't sure if I would enjoy it, not being a particular fan of mountaineering, or camping, or about anything represented by this article. However, the slow-burning narrative was… Compelling, I suppose is the word? While I wasn't too keen on the content itself, the thematic message was really strong. This theme of stagnation, giving up, giving in and this entire devotion to an idea or project was really good.

Lastly, the ending. God. I'm not yet sure of if it was dissatisfying, or satisfactory, and to a degree, I feel like that was the whole point. At the very least, I'm sure I'll be upvoting this one. The writing and the execution was marvelous, and the images and descriptors of them were equally good.

Very good, I love how it kept you wondering what was going on and then never explains. It's a really bold move but it really makes the story kinda heartbreaking. I liked the characterization and I think its the first comment I've made on an article where I found no SPaG errors. take an upvote +1

There's a sort of heartbreak in finding out the journal entries don't say anything the foundation hasn't figured out on its own, other than how the first agent vanished.

So much work for a goodbye letter.
