This one was a heartfelt labor to write. I spent the better part of a year working on it because it required me to be in a certain headspace that wasn't going to be emotionally taxing.

Spoilers under the collapsible.

• The silence is activated by the remembrance and trauma associated with the loss of Sophia Hall.
• There are two reasons that the silence stops being acknowledged. The thematic one is that, after sometime, we as people forget about those grieving around us. This was to simulate that.
• Jessica Glaick, the mother, is not the only person the silence can originate from.

This was really well written. I assume the silence has to do with the grief the family feels from Sophia's death, at least that's what I could gather. The part about how quiet it was when she had her seizure (During Joe's interview) brought me to that conclusion.

That being said, I'm not really the biggest fan of listpages. There's just something about clicking on the next iteration that brings me backwards through an article, like I'm not actually progressing through the story.

The story itself was really good though. It's a reluctant +1 from me.

Thank you for the read. You're assumptions are correct.

As for the listpages thing, I initially had this under tabs, but each reviewer expressed they would have much preferred this be listpages instead. I'm sorry that wasn't the case for you.

EDIT: I've now gotten two people that say they disagree with listpages. As such, I've edited the article to contain a version that exclusively uses tabs.

As I said when I read this for crit purposes, this incredibly effective.

Sometimes a work perfectly hits on the feeling of loss and the long road to recovery from it, where you never quite get back to where you were and the slightest reminder can bring it all back.

I lost my mother traumatically a few years ago, almost 7 actually, and a simple picture or the smell of sunflowers or the sound of her favorite band, will bring it all back for a moment.

The silence is a perfect metaphor for this horrible phenomenon we call mourning, and I commend this piece for touching me right in that spot.

I remember coming back home without a sister.

I was already planning on upvoting once I realized what was going on here conceptually, but this line hit much harder than I expected.

This is easily one of the most emotionally-rich and relatable articles I've read in a long time, on this site or otherwise. Fantastic job!

This was an incredibly gripping story. I found it fascinating that the quiet mystery of the source of the silence ran in parallel with the real story about a family dealing with loss in such a way that kept both plotlines moving. I was so caught up with the story about the source of the silence that when the ending came around, I felt almost chastised for focusing in on this mystery when the real tragedy of the story was the death. In universe, I'd imagine that this is more or less how the Foundation felt-chasing the mystery while disregarding the human cost.

As a very small side note, I thought the initial interview log was a really interesting way of exploring how the Foundation does first contact information gathering while maintaining the Veil. Really nice touch there.

Thank you all for reading this work. Since it's a personal piece, it was difficult for me to find the right moments to finish it or even let people read it. Its narrative is rooted heavily in my own experiences with losing loved ones too soon, as well as those close to me that experienced loss much sooner than I did. Letting this be a medium of which I could express my perspective on those moments means a lot to me.
