So, quarantine really is getting to me if it’s not clear from this article. Hopefully you’re all keeping safe and mentally healthy (as best as we can manage in isolation).

Honestly, taking part in helping expand this wiki has been a welcome distraction and creative outlet desperately needed.

► Spoilers ◄

• The high levels of oxytocin and melatonin affect the instances in that they are often fatigued, and content. They feel no need to reach out for that connection anymore, or no ambition to join with others.

• Bell is as much alone as anyone that is affected by SCP-XXXX, as is clear from his condition upon discovery. He intended this ritual as a way to connect together with others into a hive mind, thinking that if he could spread the ritual wide on the internet, then he would have forced a community to materialize and he could finally connect with someone. But he screwed up, the ritual wasn’t meant to be used like that, and the people are dying. Without joining together physically, there is no hive mind just a vague empathetic sense of the others. So long as the Foundation is keeping them separate, then the hive-being won’t be formed.

Nice SCP you got here. I thought the anomaly was interesting and execution was very well done. However, I did have two problems the first being the dialogue while it's fine and it gets the job done I didn't feel like the SCP had enough of a personality for me to really get connected to it. Lastly, while I see where you're trying to go with this I don't think the execution pays off as well as it could have part of that being I don't really have an emotional connection to the SCP.

Overall the good far outways the bad. +1

It's an interesting concept, but the problem is it's VERY reminiscent of the game Discover My Body by Yames, whether that was intentional or not. No vote for now.

Grigori Karpin 06 Aug 2020 02:40

I have never heard of the game, but thank you for reading

Edit: I have now looked up the game, and although I can see some connections… this is a fairly obscure game.

"What if humans were ectomycorrhizae?" was not a question I ever expected an SCP to answer. But this one did.

I want to pay homage to this funny comment… but really I just wanna say how huge a fan of those Klavigar studies I am.

Awesome stuff!

Overall solidly written but I feel like it just kind of ends without a satisfying twist or something to make it stand out. Additionally, the log in which the mtf goes to the house of the OP does nothing for the story and I question why it's there.

I feel as if this could be improved by exploring how some random kid with no social skills managed to get ahold of a sarkic fungus rune thing. I'm not saying that this needs a lore dump, but maybe they search his chat logs and find that he was talking to a neosarkic or something that gave him the key to make people more like him and therefore easier to talk to. I say this because most of the people affected by this seem to be naturally introverted, an effect amplified by the mushroom transformation.

Well, first of all, thanks for the read.

the log in which the mtf goes to the house of the OP does nothing for the story and I question why it's there.

I intended the log to examine the body horror present in the potential of this anomaly, and I've gotten compliments on it before for doing that… although I respect your opinion, I don't see myself changing that aspect.

but maybe they search his chat logs and find that he was talking to a neosarkic or something that gave him the key to make people more like him and therefore easier to talk to.

This is very interesting and already thinking about ways I could rework this to emphasize this aspect without dragging the article's length out so much. That could also serve to be a good stinger and address the lack of a twist you mentioned. So Thanks!

Edit - implemented the suggested changes to the end and I quite like it

This works a lot better, I enjoyed the banter in the IRC chat. Well done, + 1.

TheConqueringEnigma 17 Feb 2021 20:22

This was a pretty easy +1 vote for me.

Spoiler?

The only critique I have is that there is no mention of the fungal growth being ambulatory prior to the MTF log. Was this intentional to drive home the horror, or is the initial instance somehow different?

Other than that tiny nitpick, it's great!

Lovely article. Scratched my sarkicism itch perfectly. Very well done.

GreenRaven 27 Jul 2021 10:28

Good article, but I can't upvote.

Fungal structures are capable of capturing carbon dioxide and taking sustenance from sunlight through photosynthesis.

Fungi don't have chloroplasts, they can't photosynthesize, and they don't breathe in carbon dioxide; they breathe it out, taking in oxygen.

Either it needs to be specifically stated that these fungi doing so is part of their anomaly, or that part needs to be removed. As it is, it looks like the common error of lumping in fungi with plants.

fair enough, change made.

I don't really understand the vehemence, or i guess the standard you're proposing with one mistaken line meaning you can't upvote an article you call "good". But obviously, that's not up to me and your suggestion was helpful

Scorpion451 19 Aug 2021 03:38

Understandable, I have similar reactions to bad chemistry- there's one SCP (don't remember the number) that has bacteria producing Helium as a lifting gas.¹ It's like nails on a chalkboard.

Footnotes

1. An SCP-worthy anomaly in itself that would involve either cold fusion or very large explosions. Meanwhile there are real-world bacteria that produce hydrogen, a comparable lifting gas, as a byproduct of their metabolism.

I don't really understand the vehemence

Noting that it doesn't look like (either edit version of) the comment was vehement at all. Readers shouldn't be obligated to sugar-coat their feedback if they're pointing out something that they feel needs to be edited.

or i guess the standard you're proposing with one mistaken line meaning you can't upvote an article you call "good"

General note for readers, this is fine to do as it is voting based on content of the page. There are definitely articles where a single line can break suspension of disbelief for the rest of the piece.

Vehemence is not a negative word and does not connote a need for “sugar coating” it only means “showing strong feeling” and that’s the only meaning I intended as that’s what I understand the word means.

Now maybe it was an incorrect word? But when someone says they “can’t” do something to me it implies their ideals or standards won’t allow them to… which is why I used the word vehement as I thought it was a strong feeling.

I don’t see that as a complaint. It was genuine curiosity.

If it is unclear please let this stand as a clarification. I was genuinely grateful for the edit as noted in my original response.
