Like this piece? See it and many more saplings like it, at Popsioak's Garden, here!

Formless shapes in the darkness
We are as harmless as the thoughts in our heads
Drinking poison and chewing on concrete
leaving burn holes in the sheets of our beds
we think the world is alright
we think the world is alright, and that's a lie

This is where 999 was made. The "shadow" 682 is a conglomeration of all the anger, rage, anxiety, sadness, and negativity it's whisked away. Just like energy, it can't be created or destroyed — only bottled up deep inside you, like any emotion. Only thing is — it's doomed to explode later.

Emotions aren't a physical object capable of what you're suggesting. I have had plenty occasions where I feel angry and I simply stop and the feelings do just go away. The mind is much more complex than a bottle holding fluids.

Christopoulos 19 Jun 2020 01:34

Given the SCP that this is implied to be the birthplace of, I feel this is far too melodramatic.

+ My thoughts

Both 999 and 682 are old Series 1 shlock, but 999 especially. Having a dark, mysterious take on 999's creation doesn't change the fact that 999 fucking blows, and this article honestly suffers by trying to do anything with it.

Additionally, a happiness-generating slimeball is nowhere near effective enough at what it does to be considered the antithesis to something like 682.

Hard -1.

Connor MacWarren 19 Jun 2020 03:39

Just because a series 1 article like 999 can't be reimagined into something different because it's mired in its past is kind of saying that "this thing is so bad, nobody can remake it into something better/interesting."

Which, I believe, does the author a disservice of trying to do something new and different with an old article. Just because an article sucks and is rich in the history of the site, doesn't automatically mean that nobody can do anything with it. That restrains creativity just because it's so bad. That's like saying kaktus can't do his own version of The Littlest Browbeater because it's so universally disliked by the community that he can't try to fix it.

JackalRelated 19 Jun 2020 04:44

To be entirely fair, The Littlest Browbeater only got so low because it was in rewrite for over a year before kaktus stepped in and rewrote it himself.

I think this is the best DoA article not counting SCP-4220. +1

I don't think the fact that this article is based around Series I SCPs takes anything away from it. This article adds a nice, new take on an old SCP that could use a little more than just "an orange slimeball that cures depression". The idea that 999 doesn't just cure depression but rather whisks it away is pretty neat.

This article does have an odd layer of ambiguity to it that confuses me a little, like why does the farmhouse have a 20-meter-radius "negative zone" or why is there a room with the sounds of whimpering dogs? But I suppose that's what you intended.

For the paragraph about room four you have "A prototype SEACM" but in earlier paragraphs you wrote it as "SEA-CM", you may want to fix that.

Needs editing for awkward phrasing, some unstated details that I feel like the foundation overlooked, etc. On mobile rn tho

I really enjoyed this article. It walks the line between withholding and providing answers well, and the atmosphere throughout is effective.

"No mass has survived longer than 30 minutes." - This is pretty great analogue for how 682-inspired coldposts get downvoted off the site quicker than it takes to write them!

Never even thought of that! Outside of Termination Attempt and the Canister that it breached containment to get to there aren't that many that throw a little more flavor to the Hard To Destroy Reptile.

And considering the events of New Job, this explains how 999 came out a complete opposite of his father. But that adds to another mystery: How bad was he before the Department managed to 'purify' him? Judging by the description of whatever's in the attic, the 999 he once was is not happy about it.

Why it works

ResearcherRando 17 Aug 2022 16:15

I was looking through Department of Abnormalities entries and got this. I dislike anyone being like “ew series I” for many reasons, and i dont think it has any effect on the quality of this article.

In my eyes this is about some defunct science group attempting to create a completely positive being (999) but either due to its creation or as its origin you have the most hateful being (682). It has these hints of the scientists caring about the 999 specimens (the toys, being distraught at losing them) and the difficulties of getting something thats ONLY good. so yeah, i think this is a great DoA article!

I think the emotional aura should come earlier in the description, given it's kind of the core of the whole thing.

Also, if the SEA-CM is your own creation… the initialism feels kind of rough. Something more natural would fit better - maybe Emotional Anomaly Suppression Array, EASA?
