I've been trying to upload an SVG file for a piece I'm working on, but every time I try, it shows up as 'ASCII text' and doesn't work. I tried both on my sandbox and my author page just to see if it was a site issue, but it's just not working at all. I'm pretty sure I've uploaded SVGs before, so I don't understand what's happening this time?

I ask myself this very same question every time I try to upload an SVG.

You'll need to open up your SVG file in a text editor (you might need to rename it to ".xml" to get that to work - don't forget to unrename it afterwards) and add the following two lines to the top, then reupload it:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd">

Wikidot should then recognise the file as SVG instead of whatever nonsense it thought it was before.

Having investigated this issue for Wikijump (see WJ-96), I believe the source of this error is because Wikidot utilizes an outdated magic database file, which requires that the SVG start with <?xml\ version=". This is not used in most modern SVGs, which instead start with just <svg>.

A more recent magic database handles both kinds of SVGs just fine.
