Well, here it is—my Jam 2020 Explosions entry.

I challenged myself a little extra for this: The theme was explosions, so I did everything I could to make an explosion-related SCP without using the word "explosion" one single time.

I would like to thank the critters who gave me great feedback, the friend who recorded brand-spanking-new audio for me in under 48 hours, and the community for being, y'know, awesome.

Edit: Been asked a couple times: My friend voiced the first audio clip; I provided all 3 voices for the second audio clip. I then did all the audio editing, including recreating real aviation cockpit alert sounds.

Update June 2021

I recently discovered that this SCP was adapted into an animation by youtuber ODDity. The animation is really cool, adds additional flavor to the lore of this SCP, and I highly recommend checking it out here.

As I said in chat — this is very impressive. It's difficult enough to pull off a multi-media article, especially one that is convincing. There is the fact that this was written and compiled, start to finish, in an accelerated time frame, and that requires a lot of talent. Genuinely one of the most technically impressive articles I've seen since SCP-5050, and before that, since Kate McTiriss graced the site (and that's no exaggeration).

I do hope that readers have a chance to check this one out in the sea of other articles in this contest.

The ending appears thought-provoking but collapses after a few moments of thought, even with your attempts at lampshading. Of course people wouldn’t realize that the Iraq War was happening if there was nobody reporting it. The containment procedures don’t go nearly deep enough either — how is the media being silenced? What kind of political pressure is being employed to ensure that uninvolved countries keep silent? Most importantly, why would the Foundation want to keep this war a secret? These questions aren’t answered or even touched upon.

Honestly, in my opinion that adds to the mystery and appeal of it. Sometimes leaving things to the imagination is far better than explaining everything

I think why the Foundation is covering it up is meant to be up to speculation. My thoughts as to why they're covering it up might have to do with the two mystery super powers or some of it is being fought through anomalous means as well. The two culprits of the mystery powers is India attacking China and Brazil attacking the United States

There is 1 aspect to this that kills my suspension of disbelief: why would the US deliver a nuclear payload using a bomber, in the modern era? An ICBM can deliver a nuke to a target in minutes flat, and is virtually impossible to counter- perhaps the unspecified nuclear strike over America nullified some launch sites, but there are dozens of them, across the US. I just don't get it.

Very late response, but the US maintains all aspects of the Nuclear Triad (air, land, and sea). Each aspect has different benefits and drawbacks. Plus, having all three makes it harder to wipe out all at once.

For example. ICBMs have longer range and high payloads, but they're easier to detect being launched (and thus provoke a counterattack), potentially vulnerable to strategic missile defense systems, and are often launched from set locations.

Gravity bombs from stealth bombers and cruise missiles launched from more traditional aircraft may have smaller payloads, but they're harder to detect when launched, can be launched from closer and from moving locations, and are harder to intercept. Similar deal with submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Plus, if they were deploying tactical or limited-yield nuclear weapons (something the US does still have and believe it or not have policies about using), they wouldn't be using ICBMs.

This has an incredible amount of potential and I absolutely love the concept. Unfortunately, the ending falls flat, destroys what was previously established, and takes the whole piece down with it. In retrospect, a lot of the article is quite mundane, especially in terms of how the war was fought and the progression of the events. I feel a lot could be done here, but this just isn't it.

I really enjoyed this article, the idea feels ripe for content. The ending line feels slightly undeveloped though. However, despite that, it is still a +1 from me.

Have to downvote due to totally inadequate descriptions of military operations, making me unable to suspend my disbelief. There is very little hope for any other nation to launch any sort of amphibious invasion of American soil without liberal use of nuclear weapons. That the war lasted for so long implies a strangely half-hearted deployment of strategic nuclear weapons - when the deliberate launching of one would inevitably set off a counter-strike of greater magnitude. Mutually assured destruction.

The war never happened because the war as it's described in the document is too silly to have existed. Kauai can only be taken if all US air and naval presence from Hawaii and surrounding regions have been destroyed. This implies the annihilation of the US Pacific Fleet. Even if our 2020's China were mobilized for war, they still have no experience nor even doctrine for conducting naval operations of that scale. China's military today isn't even geared towards Pacific dominance. Its main concern is projecting regional power towards Taiwan and India. Its naval stance is strikingly defensive. Our PRC has the largest coastal defense force in the world, bristling with battery upon battery of anti-ship missiles. It is defensive because it doesn't have the political and financial resources to be offensive. Because it is the weaker military. A poorer 2000's China simply cannot hope to do anything about Hawaii, much less the US mainland.

The only real offensive capabilities China has against the US would be its strategic nuclear arsenal. It is tiny when compared to its American counterpart. The moment China uses one on the United States, to attack a military installation, then the Americans will use a liberal definition of the term 'military installation' and launch a significantly more devastating counter-attack. If the PRC decides to strike at a population center, then the US is sure to nuke Beijing, Shanghai, Nanking and everything else.

A total war with nukes lasting this long between two combatant nations of vastly differing capabilities is simply not possible. Your military science is unsound.

In addition, it would be flatly impossible to sequester information such that the sudden disappearance of an entire island in Hawaii would not be noticed. Also an unspecified location in New Jersey, and a nuclear detonation in Italy. The Illuminati so beloved of the tinfoil hat brigade couldn't manage such a stunt, much less the (rather more limited) SCP Foundation.

Bomb from another timeline where this happened, both put into stasis and projected into this reality by their Foundation - within reason for the Foundation.

The war as described happening in this reality, yet somehow being covered up even when the strikes are on American soil - you've just snapped my Suspenders of Disbelief.
