Well, here it is. This is something I've been working on for almost six months now. Gone through a torrent of revisions, draft threads, rewrites, and finally ended up on the mainlist.

Thank you to Tanhony, Yossipossi, DrAkimoto, Oboebandgeek, and stormbreath for reviewing this. Thank you to everyone else for all the help you gave on previous versions of this, wouldn't be here without you guys.

Disclaimer: The old 2510 was deleted due to plagiarism, which I had nothing to do with. This is an entirely separate article that I placed into the available slot.

Very few things manage to incite dread properly. You need to be cognizant of the possible ending, and there can't be any subversions along the way. As a consequence, the plot often feels too obvious when not done correctly.

I am, pleased to say, however, that this piece handles dread wonderfully. We are made aware of what is to come, and yet, we remain curious enough to keep reading. That alone, in my opinion, deserves an upvote - and the article fails convince me to vote otherwise.

I'm glad you've decided to take the "we can't talk about it" route. The piece was effective enough even considering I knew what the twist was, and the interview was structured rather nicely.

This is, I think, the 5th version of this skip I've seen, and I think it's the best one. Upvoted.

Almost feels like an homage to 3935 but simple, direct. I like it. The small town with a dark secret is a common trope but can be used in so many interesting ways.

my thoughts exactly. it's 3935, but more to the point, in a good way. and it does end up taking a different path to get to the same destination. i liked it.

I enjoyed this and upvoted right after reading it! But after thinking about it for a little while, I'm afraid it might fall into the "readers are smarter than the Foundation" trap. It isn't hard for a reader to infer what happened here, and it seems like Agent Barnes has at least an inkling, too. But it seems like a criminally negligent lack of action in the Foundation's response!

The anomaly MIGHT be unique to Samantha McArthur. But what if the source of it is Kevin Cosniak? Or Derek Thompson? Why not have an undercover agent embedded to keep an eye on them?

Otherwise, there might be a string of unremembered corpses in bathrooms following one or both of them through college.

Amos: I mean, they're kinda dicks, If I'm being honest. But they're not that smart. They get through most things by dumb luck, from what I can tell. That's just what I think of them.

Barnes: …Ah. I'll keep that in mind.

What amos is trying to say here, and what Barnes is picking up here, is that he doesn't think Cosniak or Thompson were the source of the anomaly, but that they were just lucky.

If I had to point a finger towards anything, it'd be the town itself. Them going to college would actually make ot less likely for something like this to happen, whoch i think the Foundation understands.

The Foundation has a good understanding of what happened here. They don't know how it started, but they know what appeared to be the impetus. Due to the socio-antimeme, no one's gonna talk to them, and its self-containing. So they've administered a few amnestics, and took away the body.

I do think this is a valid point, though. Let's say the Foundation draws the same conclusion as you (that the town might be the source of the anomaly), wouldn't they be interested in getting to the bottom of it and somehow containing it? By getting to the bottom of it, I mean that I understand one of the main objectices of the Foundation is to figure these things out. What exactly is the anomaly? Can it happen again? Can we maybe even use it for our own advantage somehow?

If it pertains to "protecting the high school football team", will it cause other incidents to ignored? Would it give some sort of "immunity" to players of the team? What if there are smarter players in the future, who will figure this effect out and use it for their advantage? I don't know, it just feels like something is missing here…

I think in the interview log, the first time that Barnes speaks is listed as “Interviewer” but it’s Barnes for the rest of the log. Typo?
