Here's my entry for the Short Works contest, clocking in at 234 words. All images (yes, plural — refresh the page) are original works by myself.

I'll leave the meaning of the title ("Doomsday") as an exercise for the reader.

The original concept of this was just for a regular SCP, and it would have gone well over 500 words; it seemed to fit the idea of this contest, though, so I repurposed it.

Okay, someone did an explainer for this article on /r/SCPdeclassified, so I'll just clarify one thing: The list title, "Doomsday", is a reference to this song. It doesn't really convey any information about the article.

This is probably one of my favorite entries. It's beautiful in its own way, and I love what SCP-2808 (the anomaly and the article) is trying to accomplish and say.

MrWrong 24 Jul 2015 08:21

Pros:

• The procedures is evocative and acts as a good hook to the rest of the work.
• EDIT: The pictures! By God! Okay, brilliant use. Slightly cheap, but I will accept it.

Cons:

• While I know that 2808 is incomprehensible even in-universe, I find it hard to attach myself to an SCP if it is ill-defined (even as a concept).

Verdict: Neutral vote Upvote (curse me for submitting to veil pictures)

While I know that 2808 is incomprehensible even in-universe, I find it hard to attach myself to an SCP if it is defined (even as a concept).

I suppose that's a risk I take, but I decided that withholding the information would be infinitely more interesting than any definite thing I put in there. I also wanted to demonstrate, rather than simply state, that 2808 is committed to posing an impediment to smooth bureaucratic functioning; I figured that refusing to pin it down to any conceivable form would do the trick.

EDIT: The pictures! By God! Okay, brilliant use. Slightly cheap, but I will accept it.

"While fascinating, this phenomenon seemed to have no relevance to SCP-190 SCP-2808's true purpose, other than as a mere parlor trick, to entertain babes and fools."

It was strange. And surprisingly fun.

I did guess who it had written it (having the memory of a goldfish) by the second paragraph. Take that as you will.

Thekillerax 24 Jul 2015 09:26

I liked all the images (nice job on making those) and the SCP itself was rather interesting. I'm getting some AWCY vibes from it; this seems to be the kind of stunt they'd pull. The Fallacy of Bureaucracy.

This is definitely the kind of thing certain elements of AWCY? would get up to, but I had neither reason nor space to give them a shout-out. Personally, though, I like to imagine that this is something that predates bureaucracy and has developed a distaste for it.

Yeah, I do think the way it's written now, where it's not tied to anything in particular, is the best way to present it.

No vote.

FWIW, I've already written two thematically similar pieces: SCP-920-EX (the workgroup printer) and SCP-2553 (the juridicial person).

The effect is not the most interesting to me, but the art was beautiful, and I enjoyed the overall feeling. +1

Akumeoy 25 Jul 2015 15:56

I've gotten a few compliments on the art, so I'm gonna direct people who are interested to my Tumblr, where I post a lot more like them.

Downvoted, because I find it yet another entry that tries making the scip in question difficult to write about in order to fit within the word count.

Malum Lupus 24 Jul 2015 14:26

I dig it. I see as an embodiment of primal disorder which prevents the ordered functions which human society works on from functioning. That's the meaning of "Doomsday". Or maybe not. Whatever, I like it.
+1

When I first read through, I started freaking out because how could this not be Keter? It's a skip as an unimpeachable Site Director for crying out loud?

Then I read it again and realized it's never taken action on its own, and figured out that this thing probably isn't sapient.

Then you said you wanted to demonstrate how it messes with the Foundation bureaucracy, and it clicked.

You get a +1, and I've got a headcanon where the director of Site-47 is a soft pretzel.
