In which I once again pop in unannounced after a prolonged absence to post something - in this case a Broken Masquerade tale. Like before, I’m using said tale to draw attention to an SCP I like that has no other material written about it, SCP-1309.

This whole tale has weird political undertones and it doesn't sit right with me. The writing is engaging enough but the fact that this is political commentary which seeks to support a narrative I do not agree with kind of sours it for me.

EDIT: Also the formatting for the reddit posts feels lazy.

Interesting criticisms. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but reading your comments I can see why you'd feel it has political undertones.

RE: Formatting, I admit it's not the best. I joined before the days of coding wizardry on the pages so my articles all tend to be plainly formatted.

My understanding is that this portrayal of the media and activist-types is part of a larger trend within the Broken Masquerade canon, which makes it more understandable. But as is, the citizens of the anomalous town could be read as a stand-in for… I don't know… racial and ethnic minorities, I guess? And the extended allegory reads that social reform is inherently meaningless because our current institutions aren't failing us, all societal problems are the machinations of mob mentality and corrupt journalists. Trust the Foundation, they know what's best.

I doubt that's what the intention was and that does seem to be the rhetoric of the Broken Masquerade canon as a whole, but that's kind of how it reads, I guess.

I see what you mean. It actually came from the fact that the inhabitants don't want to leave in the original article:

Researcher Laura ███████: Alright. Tell me, Mr. ████, how do you like living in your town?

George ████: It's perfect. I'd never want to be anywhere but here and now.

And the protests come from the misunderstanding of their situation - they believe the Foundation is keeping them there, as opposed to them literally being unable to leave.

But again, your concerns are valid and I respect your vote.

Meh. Not everything needs to be over the top. If it's functional and readable formatting, what's the problem? Making it actually look like a reddit thread is just unnecessary fluff. Fluff is fun and pretty if you can do it, but it's not a requirement.

Well, it seems just the tiniest bit hypocritical of you, no? You can't say shit even vaguely right wing in your article. Could I complain about an anti religion vibe in an article? Of course not, I'd get fucking lynched. So I don't see why we can't have statements going both ways.

So what if it seems right wing? Are all right wing opinions invalid?

All can be good in the world.

Wait. Wait, wait… What? So, not only do governments around the world know about the Foundation, but apparently… everyone does? Like… there are actual people who protest against the Foundation in favor of an anomaly? I'm very confused.

The prose isn't bad here, but this was really weak emotionally. All I see here is "Stupid, uninformed redditors, who are eager to make assumptions and antagonise the Foundation, cause a ruckus. The ruckus is then solved as they realise their mistakes and all is well." There's barely any tension and the conflict between Unmasked Foundation and the ignorant masses doesn't engage me very much. None of the characters shown here are particularly endearing interesting, so I'm left without a strong anchor to these events. The stakes here aren't present in any meaningful way, so the ending doesn't impact me at all. The cannabis stuff is completely inconsequential, as it is introduced incredibly late and there's not much to make me care about the problems this revelation creates. Overall, downvote.

When was this posted? December of last year?

I love this angle of Broken Masquerade, because even though the Foundation did do many fucked up things, most of the time anomalies are contained for a reason, and this gives the people of 1309 a much needed voice. It's completely believable that there would be people thinking they're being liberators, when they are just being annoying.

Not to mention there really isn't a way to "liberate" them. Containment is pretty much the only option.
