T Rutherford and
Uncle Nicolini for their critique on this. I wanted to do a piece about something both out there and very possibly real. Originally I wanted this piece to be more about existential dread but the overall theme came out more hopeful.
I enjoyed the hell out of reading this. The Fermi Paradox is one that I've spend many a substance-fueled night discussing with my nerd friends, and this brought a lot of those memories back to me. Very fun, very verisimilar, and very smart. +1
Is the Berserker Hypothesis the one connected to the Von Neumann probes?
Yes, the Berserker Hypothesis is where a civilization destroys other budding civilizations by use of self replicating drones. Usually out of indifference while collecting raw materials and energy.
Well, we both know what happened to Stephen Baxter after he got revived from his Windows 95 acid trip: He went on to invent the Xeelee Stomp!
Also,
With no methods of generating the required energy within Sol system without breaking the veil, the probe will first jump to Alpha Centari after clearing the Kuiper belt in two years.
It's interesting that they'd jump there of all places (wink, wink).
Anyway, this is a great article. I love the level of nerdiness required to get invested!
There's many good things about this article but I really dig that this is a Cosmic Top-Secret classified SCP about space.
Footnote 4 feels both like it should be after "class" and not "Asimov" and like it should be reworded to be a little clear that it means something like "Asimov class probes are defined by a system that generates a wormhole between an anomalously projected gravity well and a connected gravity well near a target location's star" (near feels iffy here; I'm not sure what the right word to describe the second gravity wells location w.r.t the target star is)
Tbh I didn't even get footnote 4 until I read your quick rewrite. Much clearer than the original.
Also enjoyed the article, n.b.
i believe this is the second Level-6 article on the site? i hope they keep being written as well as our current two examples are. +1 for this one, as short as it is. hoping it gets a follow-up tale soon.
What was the other one? I remember reading one recently, but can't recall the number.
nice little "thinker" skip. I would like some kind of followup to this, personally, but as it is, it's still an easy +1
I'm not sure if this SCP should be cosmic top secret, I think it should at LEAST level 3 or 4 maybe 5.
Is the implication that the Aasimov drone ends up causing the Berserker Hypothesis to be true, and that is why the Berserker guy exhibited disgust at the human race, and woke up precisely when the final guy fell asleep? Not sure if I'm just grasping at straws.
I left suggestions of various other solutions to Fermi's paradox occurring (lunar nuclear war symbolizing the great filter and such) to make the future uncertain. The creators of 4762 could be trying to contain humanity out of a fear that we would create a beserker drone. They could also be viewing our astronomical space like a nature preserve and keeping us contained for our own good. A real-world sense of wonder at that mystery is what I was trying to channel. To be honest, I don't think I could really discern the motives of whoever made 4762 because they operate in a way not just alien to us but more advanced.
This would probably be more impactful if I knew what all those hypotheses were. I can guess, but my idea for "zoo" was actually the last one so apparently I need help. Why not explain all of them? It's helpful both in- and out-of-universe.
Seconded. I think that familiarity with, or at least awareness of, Fermi's paradox, is far more common than the knowledge of many of the hypothetical solutions, at least by the names they are listed under. Footnotes would not interrupt the flow for those who don't need them, but would likely increase unfamiliar readers' enjoyment and understanding of the article.
