The U.S.S Eldridge as an SCP is a bit of a bad idea — however, using aspects of the Philadelphia Experiment/Project RAINBOW (along with it's supposed successor the MONTAUK experiments) could be interesting. Don't use those words, but hinting at them would be neat.

Perhaps it's a smokescreen for something nastier.

Actually that's not true, its the speed of the air in relation to the wings. If the air isn't going anywhere, then there isn't anything to push the aerofoil shape of the wings up. Ordinarily, the air pushes the wings out of the way when it goes at fast enough speeds.
On a treadmill, that air is staying in the same place so nothing happens.

That would make sense if the WHEELS were providing the motive force.

They aren't. The wheels on a jet are spinning freely. The ENGINES provide the motive force.

What happens is that the jet takes off at the same rate of speed, but the wheels spin twice as fast as they go. It's like pushing a rollerskate across a treadmill. It doesn't matter if the treadmill is running or not, you can still push it up to the top with about the same effort (although getting it started will be more awkward)

But if the plane is in the same place relative to the air, its the aerofoil wings that do the actual lifting. Engines do provide motive force, but if the treadmill is moving at the same speed as the plane, the air isn't moving so no lift can be generated. http://www.airfraid.com/2002/flying/will/technical.asp
The fact that the wheels aren't being powered isn't part of it. If the engines are providing the energy to generate speed equal to the speed that the treadmill is moving in the opposite direction then, provided that there is no significant wind, the air isn't moving in stationary to the wings. The engines can go as fast as they want, as soon as they overcome the momentum of the treadmill it will fly, but since in the original thought experiment, the aeroplane's speed is matched by the treadmill, it makes no difference how much speed is made.

Plane moves forward at 10 mph

Treadmill moves backward at 10 mph

Wheels spin at 20 mph.

Treadmill moves backward at 20 mph to match wheels.

Wheels spin at 30 mph. Plane moves forward at 10 mph.

It doesn't matter. The wheels are free spinning. The plane will take off. You can't match the "rate the wheels spin" because the thrust is being provided from the engines. Once the wheels overcome the friction of the bearings, the entire thing will accelerate… provided the rapidly spinning wheels stay intact.

how about a giant conveyor belt with a plane on it that causes everyone around it to start arguing madly? and then eventually beat each others brains in in a massive riot? and from the forums I've seen(200,300,400 comments) it would definitely be Keter class. And it can't even be stopped by Task Force Myth Busters.

(don't get me wrong, i love debates like this. at my school we had a huge one "is jumbo shrimp an oxymoron" {the lame battle cry of my side was "no YOU'RE a moron})
