Wow. The things that could this machine could toss out…
should be illegal
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"
Couldn't you ask for a cup of drink that was perfect but wouldn't make you want to kill yourself?
Hey, if the machine can apparently use any money, shouldn't somebody compare the exchange rates it uses to real world ones? Can it uses moneys no longer accepted normally (e.g. Spanish pesetas)?
Those products present some kind of expiration date?. Apparently they are all fresh even when the initial product was produced millennium ago.
That's a good point, but that bag with oriental fans on it that turned out to be full of dust leaves something to the imagination. Ah, whatever, this is probably my favourite SCP, as the ideas people put up just keep me coming back for more! Great stuff!
"Water had no additional taste, but testing revealed an 800% increase in mineral, carbohydrate, and protein content", question 1: why would we care that it had %800 the capbohyrates or protein of normal water?
Question 2: re "Failure to do so releases the Foundation from any obligation regarding negative effects."
I didn't know we were concerned with liability.
=]
He does make a good point. An 800% increase of 0 is… Uh. 0.
…crap. I need to edit this a tad, but mainly, I wanted to show that the water became exceptionally healthy.
Edit: Edited. A little more wordy, but more clear, I hope.
Uh, just providing some insight. Recent tests on the extended experimental log contradict the original article, namely the "rocket ring"(as the original article indicated that it only served sorts of 'food'), and the use of Mon, Euros, and other coins in the machine itself(the original article claims it only allows Yen). So uh… Change accordingly?
The machine still only serves food.
It's just that maybe it's only 'food' by the broadest possible definition of the term.
"Someone likes it. Perhaps not humans. Out of our hands."
Oh, and as for alternate currency:
giving it anything other than yen is clearly a bad idea.
perfectly-forged yen, indistinguishable from the real thing except that they were made on site: poisoned candy.
euros ground to the exact physical dimensions of yen: machine rejects them (forcefully).
mon: well, mon were exchangeable for yen at a fixed conversion rate. So I guess it would recognize them.
Nonetheless, the tone of the article indicates that it would just send those to the coin return slot, not send an abrasive/insulting item. And the "rocket ring"? I can hardly see that as food in any kind of way, unless it's for an entity that feeds entirely on kinetic energy. It's more of a toy.
The test log entries you're citing probably weren't written by Gears, and the log page itself hasn't had its entries picked over and cleaned up in months (if ever). That would probably be a better place to make edits than the article page.
Oh, the joy I have derived from reading 261's test log. I love this SCP.
The vending machine finally hit 100. Congratulations (again) Gears!
Edit: Holy shit what a ninja
It's even the same timestamp. I beat you by less than a minute.
This is my all-time favorite article on the entire site, and I don't think it will ever NOT be my favorite, but one thing still kinda confuses me: why is this not Euclid? (Specifically, why is this Safe when SCP-294 is Euclid?)
The coffee machine pulls things from our reality, which causes its effects to potentially breach containment, particularly with vague inputs. It's pretty obvious why it's Euclid.
The vending machine is pulling things from elsewhere and while the snacks it vends could have potentially dangerous effects, using the machine itself is perfectly safe.
I'd say it's a fine line and it may straddle it.
(This is my personal opinion, no idea if an "official" answer exists)
True, and I realized this after rereading 294's page—but they also both pass the locked box test (nobody really HAS to use either 261 or 294). Oh well… since that doesn't really detract from either article, it's probably best to just leave it :)
