SCP Fuel: Wikimedia's "Unidentified" Category

Wikimedia's "Unidentified Subjects" category has a lot of interesting images, many of which are under Creative Commons or Public Domain. The fact that there's something unknown about them may trigger a creative spark. And then you have a cool picture to go along with it.

Here are a few I found within a few clicks:
What's in this shack?
What is that and who's the person?
Where was this isolated from?
What happened to this tree?

Real quick, so if I take a photo from google images it probably is copyrighted? I looked for an abandoned barn in this wikimedia but unfortunately I didn’t found any. How do I get that “permission” you guys talked about in the guidelines of writing an SCP?

Probably, yes. Unless you use the filters or search specifically for free images (and even then you're not guaranteed a creative commons compliant image).

Well, because these are unidentified pictures. There are plenty of pictures of abandoned barns on wikimedia itself, because people know what an abandoned barn is.

How do I get that “permission” you guys talked about in the guidelines of writing an SCP?

Typically you would need to contact the owner of the image and ask for their permission to use the image for a creative commons licensed work.

Well… technically it's a "legal thing" so far as permission for usage of licensed work goes, but you shouldn't need a complicated series of forms or contracts.

I'm going to Sticky this because it seems like quite the useful tool to have. Wikipedia should list Creative Commons and Public Domain, which helps out a lot.

None of the ones Light highlighted in her post, but it's an impossibly large archive to make that sort of distinction overall. You'll have to find one you like and then check if it's been used.

Okay. A couple of these are getting my brain working. Just a couple of basic, short ideas, needing to be fleshed out.

One of them gives me the idea of a parasite that turns your blood acidic, although the exact process of this is TBD. Plus, it's probably already taken.

The tree gives me an idea out of To Kill A Mockingbird, specifically, the tree Scout and Jem found the things in that Radley filled with concrete. However, I know this one is sort of taken. A hole in a wall where you reach in and find something that you've lost in your life, but you lose something on your person at the same time.

Are you sure it's the saint's image, and not the saint himself? It looks like a human-shaped sarcophagus of sorts, only I'm thinking more along the lines of "creature enveloped in stone".
