New SCP. Thanks to everyone who helped with the draft.
I remember reading this once, and i think i dished out feedback on it, but i'm going to do it again.
When talking about frequency, as soon as you reach the thousand threshold on the megahertz unit, you switch it to gigahertz.
As it is, it does nothing for me. It's a combination of the Hateful Star and SCP-2716 and i do think that they pulled this off in a better way than this. I do like the implication that someone got the question wrong and that's the reason we have a lot of egregious things in the Foundationverse, but that's about it. There are some flaws in the description - you end up leaving some things to the imagination of the reader and also explaining a lot of things that you could have implied instead.
It's not bad, but i really don't feel it because the similarities with the two articles i mentioned above are really strong. The only thing i liked is the implication of the origin of the anomalies the Foundation currently contains, if i got that right. So, no vote.
Lastly, there are five round objects in the image, not six. The far left thing is a square, at least for me.
You did not comment on the Drafts thread, but thank you for doing it now. I fixed the GHz issue and removed the word 'round'. You got the implication right, I wanted to imply that without stating it directly (since it would collide with lots of headcanons).
You should not worry about colliding with other headcanons, really. They are called headcanons for a reason. You perceive the Foundation's origin and purpose in one way, but that shouldn't be a reason for someone to dislike your work just because they have a different way of seeing an outcome or a beginning for the Foundationverse. In addition, headcanons are hardly ever the same.
It's like it's trying to be an 001 proposal, but it lacks any of the emotional punch/complex story/ plot twist/complete background necessary to be a true 001, hence its relegation to mainlist status.
Would they actually be able to triangulate the location of something only a couple meters across in the vastness of space? I genuinely don't know; space tech isn't my thing.
That aside, while I don't know that I would headcanon this as the source of anomalies, and I don't quite follow the logic of this ambassador, that twist there — the brutal subversion of the audience's expectations, followed by a bit of a sinking feeling as the implications set in — was wonderfully executed, and that makes the whole thing work for me. +1.
if your reading this your gay
Well you can start by assuming that the Objects is located quite Close to the third Earth/sun Lagrange point. The pictur indicates that, and on that position it would be in an (unstable) balance between gravitation and zentrifugal force.
then you can narrow the Possition down to quite a small region of space in wich you start triangulating.
I have to nth the "possible origin of other SCPs" idea as not being for me, but the expectations you set up and then execute in a really clever way help sell this for me. That note at the end threw me for a loop. +1
Huh. For whatever reasons, I didn't react as the commenters above did; it pretty much exactly fit my expectations.
I'm waffling on my vote; this article is exceptionally well-written (not just well-written enough to reach the rather low bar required to succeed on this site), and there's something to be said for a punchy, succinctly written SCP with good use of imagery. And the concept is not bad. And I did chuckle.
But there just isn't all that much here and I've seen it before.
No vote for now; maybe I'll come back and downvote or upvote. Either way, not bad.
I feel passages in the description like
The fact that SCP-2092-1 was never received by any device in the proximity of Earth seems to support this hypothesis, since the Sun would block all electromagnetic signals from such a source.
need some ironing out (it's very "Hey, this is how the skip works, in case you didn't know") and I ultimately downvoted for the addenda. I kind of feel like we've done this before either way.
I interpreted the horrors as people, not SCPs. No human was capable of reaching that location, as far as we know, at that time. Thus, no record remains of whoever did. It might of been SCP-1000 or similar.
Oh shit, what if. It's not SCPs plaguing humanity for answering wrong. It's humanity taking over the yetis cuz they got it wrong. And by replacing them like this, the 2nd attempt to answer the question will be different.
Headcanon: This isn't aliens inviting us to the galactic community; it's aliens trolling us.
I apologise for my ignorance but what is a headcannon? Does that just mean it doesnt quite fit with what we believe of the world? I look up the definition but I find it easier asking people than Google :P
The headcanon is the reader's individual interpretation of the SCP universe. The articles in the site offer a possibility to the audience to speculate about lots of things, so everyone can develop an own headcanon. (For example you can believe that this SCP is responsible for all/some/none of the anomalies, and even consider that the human race is the punishment itself as Dax_symbiont pointed out.)
Headcannons (with double n), are a different thing.
