Black As Night: Part 6

stormbreath 15 Feb 2019 00:19

Happy Valentine's Day.

This is the final installment of Black as Night, and the conclusion to my series about Mr. Night.

britishoccult.png is sourced from here and is public domain. uiu.png was made by Zhange, and used with her permission.

Thanks to my critters: PeppersGhost, KindlyTurtleClem, ihp, rounderhouse, DrChandra, and Kakroom.

Some notes:

• UTE-7311-Disco-Beige is Leggy, the greatest bootlegger the Chicago Spirit/Spectre has ever seen. He's mentioned in Spirit Stories, and is the only other shared member of the two groups.
• Night's activities in the Wanderer's Library in 1984 are a reference to the curent SCP rp, Origins. Mr. Night is, at time of writing, the focus of an arc involving him staging a takeover of sorts on the Wanderer's Library.
• Normally criminals on the FBI Top 10 Most Wanted are caught rather quickly. The UIU Top 13 list is secret, so they don't get the main benefit of public awareness that the Top 10 does. Thus, Mr. Night has been on the list since it's inception.
• The prototype weapon that Mr. Night stole from the Pentagram here showed up in Contract Negotiations - he used it to shoot the Investor, but it didn't do much.
• Mr. Night got what he wanted out of the Hy-Brasil heist.
• The Golden Horde showing up when they did was not a coincidence. It was a small price to pay for being able to escape.

Enjoyed this piece thoroughly, even without the context of the rest of the series.

One of my goals for this series was that every piece would be able to stand on its own, so I'm very happy to hear that it works in that regard.

d-did purple have a goddamn stand? is this The Work Of An Enemy Stand???

pepsi > coke, on God

stormbreath 15 Feb 2019 20:47

The Purple keyword is meant to be Stand users. My intent was to make the Chicago Spectre have a different sort of members than the Chicago Spirit, so I included weird and unusual powers … like a Stand.

What's a Stand?

MTLemos 11 Mar 2019 17:40

From JoJos Bizarre Adventure. It's a type of superpower that usually, but not exclusively, manifests as a humanoid creature only other stand user can see. Every stand has an unique power, like controlling gravity, making stuff rot, or just punching really hard. Most stands are also named after songs or musicians, with the most recent season having such stands as Aerosmith, Purple Haze, and Sex Pistols.

This was really solid. An enjoyable ride, with a lot of cool worldbuilding. It's got a stand-user, a big pair of legs, the intersection of a bunch of different groups and locations. Just plain enjoyable.

Agent Stormbreath humanely euthanized.

oh fug.

I like this article and gave it an upvote, but I've some nitpicks about the inconsistencies of the casefile names within the article:

• 'PTE-0781-Disco-Yellow' becomes 'PTE-0781-Yellow-Disco'
• 'LTE-4269-Disco-Purple' becomes 'UTE-7269-Disco-Purple' and then 'LTE-4268-Disco-Purple' while 'LTE-4269-Disco-Purplechild' stays the same (I assume that the GOC Casfile name is supposed to be 'LTE-4269-Disco-Purple' because 'LTE-4269-Disco-Purplechild' stays the same).

stormbreath 01 Aug 2020 05:29

• PTE-0781-Disco-Yellow was just an error.
• It should have been 4268-Disco-Purple and 4269-Disco-Purplechild (number is one higher for the created anomaly).

Thank you for the catch and pointing these out!

I also thought this worked well without knowing the other material!

A couple of things I noticed:

All pictures taken of the Coalition are immediately destroyed by localized data corruption on his face and identifying features.

I feel like this was intended to either be something like "All pictures taken of the parathreat"; or "All pictures taken by the Coalition".

The box contained a large amount of confetti, classified documents from multiple Coalition member organizations, and the dismembered body of Agent Stormbreath.

This was described as a small box; to me a small box is like, a jewelry box for example… so I got kinda confused picturing the dismembered body, and had to retrace a bit. That might just be me though.

Those are minor things of course—I had fun, I think it really pulled off the setting.

stormbreath 29 Oct 2020 02:58

First note — yep, that's a typo, it should have been "by the Coalition".

Second note — small box in this context means about the size of an average Christmas present. (Note the date! Five days after the raid, which is on December 20th.) It *is* indeed to small to really fit a human body and that's intentional. Agent Stormbreath was really jammed in there.

So did no one have the equipment for an Arad reading through their multiple encounters?

Allison Chao is a Type Black? Wow. (And now I see that the Codewords spell out Black Queen)

The fact that Night also got "gifts" from Scarlet Hammer and the Insurgency made me think they might also host one of his "brothers", but that's a bit contradicted by the later opposition of Night and the Insurgency Cell as well as Nobody's Notes from the Hub.

Small Nitpick: I think Khan is a bad codeword for the Golden Horde with it being to specific to the Horde.

Good article and an interesting series. +1

Euthanized.. you mean homeboy was somehow dismembered and still alive, in a small box? That's just cold..

I see what you did there

Among other things, Mr. Night is now a plumber, eh?

bibliolatry 08 Feb 2025 04:02

The Chicago Spectre should be considered and treated as armed and dangerous at all times. The group evidently has access to multiple sources of occult weaponry, from sources such as the Factory, the Scarlet Hammer and the Chaos Insurgency. The Spectre has been observed using high-power lasers, ghost emulsifiers, and futuristic, advanced weaponry.

Extremely pedantic nitpick: 'SCARLET HAMMER' isn't the common name of an actual singular group, it's an internal GOC codename for various post-Soviet gangs and blackmarkets that trade primarily in Soviet-surplus paratech and whatnot; as such, this should be capitalized and have no 'the', as per conventional GOC style when it comes to their use of codenames
