Hey folks!
Just wanted you all to know we have a handful of new arrivals coming from the Supervisors. I get a sense there is quite a story there, but so far, they are staying tight-lipped as ever, except for us to expect more new friends in the near future.
Not sure what they are doing over there, but it did come with an additional chunk of funding.
From the jump, our new friends seem like a handful, but we've never failed to rise to a challenge before. Let's make them feel at home, yeah?
Critter Profile: Portia
Overview!

Name: Portia
Species: Loxodonta africana
Primary Caretaker: Jenni Mallory
Diet: Fruits, vegetables, & hay. Supplementary tree branches are offered as enrichment. (Preference for watermelons, has an odd fascination with chewing gum, so be careful!)
Housed: Wilson Wildlife Center, Enclosure 84
Creature Features!
Portia is the name of the female African Bush Elephant who was remanded to our care following an altercation between the Supervisor and some former staff and their friends. Regardless, she is a sweet and arguably shy giant who has taken quite a liking to her new home and the staff already; I am happy to report!
Portia has a number of quirks; the first, of course, is that she is pink. From the tip of her trunk right down to the pads of her feet and even her blood, as our veterinarians can attest! The intensity and exact color of pink can change, sometimes day from day, but commonly, she stays one shade for a week before going through a transition. We don't know exactly why this is and haven't found any direct tie to her physical health or mental/emotional status.
The next is that physically, she more closely resembles a male African Bush Elephant than a female, but in temperament and mentality, she remains in line with baseline females.
The last is that she naturally exudes a pheromone that smells of bubblegum, which causes those around her to feel like they are drunk, but not a sad drunk, but more like a giddy, sleepy drunk. It doesn't actually impair your inhibitions, as I can personally attest, but it does, I suppose, elevate the time spent with her! Which is already fantastic, in my opinion.
History!

Portia after Mudbath
Portia came to us in a situation a bit different from the other new arrivals. About a month ago, Wilson's was attacked by those Snake Finger folks with the guidance of one of our former employees.
Following the attack, the supervisors sent some of their people to Portland, Oregon, but they were not sure which. During the raid, they discovered Portia. The boys who brought her in were treating her really sweetly. It's nice to know there are folks within the Supervisors who love critters as much as we do!
Initially, she was fairly nervous around visitors, so we hoped to slowly introduce her to more people as time went on to lessen any possible stress.
Regardless, she's come around to people more and more in the time she's been here and genuinely loves interacting with guests. Thanks to her quirk, she's got quite a fan club, but we try to keep visitor interaction to just a few hours each day. That and we try and get some of the more… odd ducks at arm's length, if you get my drift.
Special Needs and Accommodations!
Enclosure 84 is a perfect fit for her, with plenty of space to roam, lots of shade, and places to swim, but it is rather empty.
Elephants are social animals, and leaving them alone is very bad for their mental and emotional well-being. We're looking into finding her a friend, if not a handful to spend time with. We're not sure if her quirk affects other animals like it does Humans, but I have noticed that birds congregate around her more often than our other larger critters. So, only time will tell.
Notes about Portia!
Portia does appear to have a minor form of PTSD, tied explicitly to loud noise, particularly those that sound like gunshots/explosions. Cars backfiring, fireworks, thunder, and due to her much keener hearing, even if you don't hear something, it doesn't mean she can't.
Early signs include her startling, sudden, frantic trunk wagging and mock charges, which could lead to injuries for those who are not prepared for it. What follows are bouts of depression that we are hoping to lessen with the introduction of other elephants to the enclosure. Right now, being in the presence of staff she trusts during these moments has been incredibly beneficial. A resting area has been placed in the loft of her barn for staff to sleep in to help alleviate her isolation-based stress following these events, but only for that! If I catch you napping in there on your breaks, you will be cleaning one of our nasty bois cages for the next month!

Hey Fae, we've already begun to see that she is becoming more comfortable around staff and visitors, but it is clear she has her favorites (aka Me! Ha, Ha.) Regardless, forming relationships with her own species is highly important. How is getting a friend of her own flavor coming?

Hey Jenni, very happy to hear she's opening up to folks! Don't go pampering her (like you always do). I've never seen an overweight ele, and I don't want to start now!
Now, when it comes to getting another, I am looking; the Supervisors are a bit… difficult about it, but one of the egg-heads out of 84 is on our side, so hopefully, she will have a pachyderm pal soon!

Yesterday was bad; someone set off a bunch of fireworks in Boring, and she panicked. It took hours to get her back into her enclosure and calm enough to settle down for the night.
When I find the little fucker that did that little number, I swear -
Outside of Portia, that is gonna cause us no small amount of problems for the next couple of days. I checked on her this morning, though, and she is still jumpy and refuses to leave the barn. Jen is with her, though, feeding her all her favorite treats, so hopefully, bearing anything else, she'll be better tomorrow.
Time to track down that clown.

Success!
Took WAY too long, but I managed to find a friend for our girl!
A young male with no quirks, the Supervisors are still going along with this plan for her well-being, so there is no issue with the purchase. I'm going to keep my eyes out for more because one friend is good, but more would be better, especially other females.
Gotta pick out a name for him. How does Jack sound?

That's amazing, Fae!
Though a young bull could end up being a hell of a handful, we'll have to introduce them slowly and see if Portia can keep him calm and that he isn't too amped.
Good luck on the hunt for more; I'm hoping we get her a big ol' herd, as long as the Sups are footing the bill, lol!
However, is there some kind of Con or Fair going on in town right now? Cause someone came by her enclosure the other day in full clown makeup and had the whole fit, too, right down the floppy shoes.
They walked off before me or the others cleaning out her pen could get a chance to talk to them, but they stood there for a good fifteen minutes just staring with this… odd smile.

That is odd.
There's nothing going on in town at the moment where you'd see something like that.
Besides, why would they be here at the Center and not-
I'll check in with some of my friends in town and see if I can sniff out any answers.
As for getting our big girl a proper family, that is still one of the top priorities!
Fully agree with introducing them slowly; best of hopes this goes well, though!

Hey, Fae. Things are going well with Jack and Portia.
He's surprisingly mellow for a bull, though that could be her quirk working to make him more amiable. Will be keeping an eye on him just to be sure.
He's only been here a couple weeks, but his personality is really shining through. He has an impish sense of humor—just ask Roger. He's lost three hats to the jokester.
Portia seems to enjoy his company, though she is still a bit standoffish when it comes to sharing the barn and hugging closer to where staff can stay. However, outside of that, I have seen a marked improvement in her overall mood.
I have high hopes that her recovery will continue at pace! Any luck finding any more herd mates for her, though?

That's wonderful, Jenni. I'll stop by today to see them both. (I have some special treats for them: watermelons, don't tell them.)
I might actually just take a lazy day with her in the pen. I need a bit of a pick-me-up, and she's the safest source around.
And no, I haven't had much luck, and there have been some rumblings amongst the Supervisors that more companions are not truly necessary for her well-being. I've been explaining that elephants are highly emotionally-minded and communal animals, but you know how they can be. The 84ers are still with us, though, this one doctor in particular: Margaret something.
I'll keep looking, though; I don't quite understand why I keep coming up dry. A lot of the folks we're normally good with have been giving me the cold shoulder.

Hey all, I'm sure some of you heard about the odd events that occurred at enclosure 84 earlier today. We're looking into what exactly happened and how the… clowns managed to get onto the property.
No one got hurt, despite what some of you little rumor mongers are saying; looking at you, Robbie, so no need to panic.
However, from now on, I need folks to message me the instant they think they see someone dressed as a clown. Don't engage with them physically unless you think you or one of the animals are in danger. Just let them know you see them. From what Jenni said, that seems to scare them off. Like I said, I have no idea what is happening, but there are people I can contact. Hopefully, this is just some town kids pulling some pranks, but we'll see.
And yes, that does mean I will be talking to the Supervisors, but please keep the grumbling to a minimum, alright, especially if they come and check up on us. The new deal through the folks in 84 has been working out very well for us; let's not jeopardize it.
Everything else is business as usual. Let me know if anyone needs anything, and have a calmer rest of the day. (Hopefully.)

Hello, this is Faeowayn Wilson,
I am contacting you through these means as there has been a recent occurrence surrounding one of the…. subjects that were placed into our care by the team working at this site.
Portia, if you remember the name you gave us?
I would like to report that she is healthy and doing better with a companion; I must once again thank you for the additional funding that was sent for her care.
However, there have been a series of occurrences outside of our wheelhouse here at WWS.
Clowns that exude a sticky black… something that smells of sugar. They've been stalking Portia and some of the individuals who care for her. We reached out to the local police, but I get the feeling this is more your speed.
Please let me know what should be done if anything, or if this is another part of her quirk that you didn't tell us about.
I am confident that we will be able to care for Portia to the best of our ability, and there is no need for a transfer. I am just curious to know what is happening. Thank you for your time.

Hello, Miss Wilson; this is Dr. Margaret Waller,
We are very glad to hear that Portia is doing well under your care, and I agree that this occurrence is quite curious.
I will pass along these concerns to others in my department, and hopefully, you will get a response within the coming days. I would also expect a visit from the Castaways; considering the recent raid that saw Portia enter your care, one can not be too careful.
If there is anything else you wish to discuss about Portia or the other recent additions to your care from 84, please feel free to reach out to me personally. I have always admired WWS and their commitment to caring for nature's more capricious oddities. My email is attached below. It's not exactly protocol, I know, but I don't see any harm in it :).

Jack isn't doing great. Poor thing.
We're not even sure what he is sick with, and he's refusing to let us get near him to check him out properly. He's also been avoiding Portia, huddling at the far end of the enclosure.
We're going to tranq him today, get the vets in, and see if we can figure this thing out. God, I hope it's nothing too serious. Seeing the big guy so drained and scared cracks my heart apart. Always does when one of the critters gets sick, but there's something different about Eles. They're so close to us, so smart, so gentle (Most of the time).
I'm honestly worried whatever the hell is going on with those creepy damn clowns is to blame; that gunk got everywhere. But I'm hoping beyond hope that it is something mundane.
If not, the Supervisors will definitely get involved, and the last time that happened, things went south fast.
I don't want to lose another one.

Good afternoon, Ms. Wilson.
It has come to our attention that one of your animals has fallen quite ill; as fellow animal lovers and caretakers, this breaks our hearts.
Especially if it occurred due to an unfortunate accident on our part.
Please contact us at your earliest convenience so that we can set things straight and amend any ongoing distress our actions have inadvertently caused you.

How did you-
Herman Fuller? My dad talked about your little circus. He didn't care for it at first, but he came to respect your boss after a handful of tiffs. I'll be honest: I'm far more skeptical than my old man, considering how mundane circuses treat their critters as "animal lovers".
Why were you sending your people here? What did they do, and why?

Your father was a good man, Ms. Wilson.
Sensible, driven, understanding. We were sorry to hear of his departure. We hope you share these qualities.
Skepticism is wise. Keeps one alive in this draining world, but I promise, we are nothing like those… competitors. We care. Deeply.
To the matter at hand. Our clowns were after something you are wasting. An opportunity. The affliction that has befallen your Jack is an utter accident and one we are willing to amend if you agree to our desires.

As stated, it was an accident. Of course, we have remedies and would gladly give them.
There is always a deal to be made, Miss, if you would simply allow me to explain.
We want Portia. She is a marvel who will keep the audience entertained simply by being present. She is a boon to performer and participant, a comforting balm after hours of hard labor.
She doesn't deserve to be held up in some dank enclosure. She deserves the spotlight!
Better yet, she's a pink elephant. She deserves a parade!
Give her to us, and we will help you cure Jack.

No.
Even if my father decided to trust you folks to do alright by your animals, what makes you think I would hand over one of the animals in my care to you just because you asked, after all the freaky stuff you have been doing around here already? You've had people stalking my folks for weeks. I've had people refuse to come to work till this gets sorted!
Portia needs delicate care and is just beginning to get better, which you have gone and bungled with whatever stunt your people were pulling! A circus would ruin her. Any circus would ruin her. She's not built for a spotlight; she's meant for a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing life. You're just out to exploit her, which is your whole shtick; I get it.
Just tell us how to heal Jack, and this can end here. Behind the bluster, my dad said there were good hearts amongst you, and you can't, in good conscience, allow him to suffer like this.

Good conscience?
No, none of that here.
The Circus has changed management since your father's intrusions and pestering. We don't take threats or insults kindly, veiled or otherwise; you just handed out a good handful of both.
Truly, we would ruin Portia? A farce. We would make her a queen and will see her amongst our family yet.
Good luck with Jack. We hope you will be more amenable to our offer in the future.

The supervisors are working with the vets to try to do something for Jack.
God, today was awful! Those carnies are still poking around, folks have been finding popcorn bags and cotton candy cones in random places, and people in Boring are talking about random clowns. Worse, they're fucking with the enclosures. Robbie mentioned something about 12 gauging the problem away. That would only make things worse, is my thinking.
The Sups set the Castaways after them, so hopefully, that scares them off for a little while.
Portia is getting worse as well. Jack's illness and all these new people have her anxious; for now, Jenni is keeping her company while the doctors look over Jack. They say they want to check her, too, just to make sure she's healthy.
If he dies, gods, I don't know what I'm gonna do; I'm still having trouble finding any more Eles to keep her company. Even one would be able to act as a buffer for her if things go south.
I hope they don't. He was such a sweetheart. Jenni cries most nights, and I don't feel much better.
More folks said they are nervous about coming to work. I can't blame them. The constant worry that you're being watched or you're gonna turn a corner and see one of those blank-eyed… things, cause for sure as shit they're not folks in costume, caught in whatever new painting, or warning, or outright sabotage they're pulling.
I thought Dad's old journals and notes would contain anything that could help me, but there's nothing. Everything he did with Herman was brief and a lot less friendly than I realized as a kid going off some things he wrote.
I need a drink. Hope tomorrow is better.

Hey folks, I know the past couple of months have been a pain, but outside of me wanting to tell you how proud I am of all the hard work you've been putting in, even with all the chaos and trouble, I actually have a bit of good news.
Portia is pregnant!
We're not sure exactly how far along she is, but the Supervisors have offered more funding for her care and are urging us to do everything in our power to ensure the health of both the mom and baby.
Jack seems to be doing a bit better as well. Thank the gods and the Sups, I guess, lol. We're gonna be keeping a close eye on him; Jenni has practically moved into the enclosure since she heard the news.
So let's just keep doing our best, and remember, if you see any of those damn carnies around the property, report it to the Castaways on the premise, or if you're feeling feisty, give them a punch in the jaw cosigned from me! Joking, joking. (Sups say this is a bad idea, so… try not to, and overall, just be careful, please?)

Sometimes I think I'm just a fool.
Things aren't great at the Center right now. Just one problem after the other keeps piling up, and the Supervisors have gone back to their usual selves, honestly.
Jack's health got worse again, and since he didn't have a quirk, they weren't keen on helping cover it; they just wanted us to focus on Portia and the baby. I tried to explain again that elephants are communal animals and that losing him would be detrimental to both, but…
The folks at 84 would have had my back, but they've been quiet lately. Really quiet. The Castaways got pulled away, too. "More pressing matters." I thought their whole thing was helping us.
Things were so good with the Sups I forgot how far down on the fucking totem pole we are.
We were trying to figure out how to get the money together to help him, and he…
He's gone. Jenni found him. She, fuck, I found her curled on top of him, just weeping. He had started playing with Portia again, bringing her toys and food gifts. He loved watermelon. I'd just bought a whole batch.
Gods.
Portia is already beginning to regress; she won't eat, she won't interact with staff, not even Jenni. I've kept trying to find another companion for her, but any offer I make is undercut within minutes; judging by their email, Herman Fuller's Circus of Dickery is behind it.
We're keeping a vet with her as often as we can, monitoring the baby. Can't they see they're endangering both of them because of this?! I'm not sure if Portia would survive losing the baby. We need to get her eating again, but Jenni's too cut up right now, and forcing her to eat feels wrong. It's suffering both ways and-
I don't know what we're going to do. The supervisors might end up having to take Portia away, and I know she won't get the level of love there she does here.
I'm not even sure why they are doing this! Dad always said they were odd people but could be worked with at the end of the day. They were creepy but reliable enough actually to take care of things properly when push came to shove.
Not this level of petty bullshit.
Gods, I wish he were here. He'd be able to figure it out, set down terms, and not be ignored by everyone and their brother just because they're young or "naive."
What a Merry Christmas.

I'm not sure if we'll be able to keep our end of the bargain, and I haven't gotten a response from anyone else, so I figured I'd try this.
We need help. Bad.
My people are getting hurt, animals tormented, buildings sabotaged, and people have stopped coming.
My dad's dream is at risk, and I'm not sure if it's because I'm unlucky, too stubborn, or some other personal failing.
Portia is eating again, but I'm worried about her and the calf.
Jenni, Portia's caretaker, is in critical condition, and she's only still with us because of Portia.

Hello, Ms. Wilson
I am devastated to hear about all that has occurred between our conversations, and I deeply apologize for our relative detachment lately.
As is often the case, we've had too many irons in the fire, but I can happily say that things have calmed down enough that immediate aid can be sent.
We at 84 have always held your work in high regard, to think it threatened, especially over an entity we handed into your care. We can't let that stand, now can we? You might consider us distant from your plights, Fae, if I can call you Fae, but I assure you we have more commonalities than you might expect, as many others at the Site would attest after recent events.
But that is not a pressing matter of conversation. I want to hear everything that has transpired in full, perhaps in person or a more direct line of communication, and I promise I will see that this comes to a satisfactory outcome.
Now, what do you need of me? Did you mention a circus?

Happy to have been of service, Fae.
I only regret we were able to take all of those carnies into custody; my peers are quite excited to see what they can learn from those we did take into custody, however. The circus has been a little too slippery for far too long. They'll be back, but hopefully, they will think better of meddling in your affairs.
Oh, some of our Agents were able to track down several of those missing elephants as well, if you are still eager to find Portia a companion. The funds should be more than enough to cover the expansion of her paddock and food costs.
I'm glad this reached the desired conclusion, and I look forward to further collaboration. As I said, being a peer is a much more amenable status quo. You will assuredly be hearing from us again soon, and please don't be afraid to reach out if you need similar aid; many members of 84 are ever ready to assist.

That was rude.
And unfair.
And all around, it's not very fun at all!
You tricked us!
When all we wanted to do was spread joy! Everyone smiles when the Circus comes to town!
And you had your big sister come down and kick in our teeth!
We will remember this, Fae.
But… you win. Portia is yours for now.

Forever* I think.
This is done and over. My people aren't gonna be bullied by a bunch of fools in bad makeup.
You come back here, and I'll twist that face of yours right-side up, hand to whatever god you fear.
Now fuck off.

Hey folks, it's been almost a year since the Valentine's Day Incident and even more since Jack's sad passing. I just wanted to give an update to those who aren't aware of how everything is going!
This is especially helpful as another individual has joined their little "family" and will likely be taking up a good bit of the staff's time. Many of you already know where I'm going with this, but Jenni and I had to keep it under lock and key for a bit while they acclimate.
May I introduce you to… Jet!

Portia's Little Boy!
He's already quite a handful, but we think it's safe for him and his mom to be allowed back in now that the new safety precautions have been established and the rest of the herd has been normalized to him. Also, I bet all of you fifty that you're not gonna be able to pry him away from Jenni. I'm pretty sure she loves him more than his own Mama.
Jokes aside, many of you were asking why we put crash pads around the enclosure and soft netting around the edges. Well, little Jet has a quirk, like his Mama, but his is a bit more bombastic.
I'll hint at what he can do: "I'll have seen almost everything when I see an elephant…"
Oh, and a warning: you can expect to see some of the Supervisors coming around more frequently soon to check on Jet and drop off a handful of new friends for us to give a hefty helping of comfortable living. Luckily, it's our pals from 84 primarily, so don't sweat it too much. Regardless, let's continue to make this year a good one. Oh, and if you see any clowns this time around, remember what the local boys showed you. Just be sure to tell the custodial staff about the ensuing mess.
Have a good day!
