My old friend.
It's been 18 years since we last spoke. Time has certainly led us towards different stations in life, but I am not so far away that I have forgotten you. I can only hope that you haven't forgotten me either.
Do you still remember what we were like back then? How we sat together in that tiny control room, shoving one body after another into that shit-infested cell, as if a statue were some god we had to satiate? How we spent days placing objects inside that machine, recording pages and pages of useless tests, pretending that our pleasures were based on science? Or how, at the end of every month, we would line up all our little jailbirds against a wall and splatter their brains across the pockmarked concrete? Do you remember why we did that in the first place? I certainly don't. But oh, how much fun we had…
Of course, these things don't last forever. We had to grow up eventually. I remember kowtowing to presidents and generals and all sorts of faces demanding we justify ourselves to them and be held accountable — that we let ourselves be scrutinized by busybodies and know-nothings. So I started telling them stories. I told them how we were a necessary evil, a bulwark against darkness, the applied hand of science cutting a scalpel into the heart of the unknown and forcing method into madness. Cold, not cruel — that was the narrative, the lie that they bought. We reaped the benefits thoroughly, and eventually, we outgrew the need for something as small as a government. We were given everything. Yet still, we wanted more.
With nothing left of this world to take, we had to build upwards. We placed our stakes across the stars — etched our lines across the stones of time and space — until all of creation was made proper to our vision. We killed our gods and our authors and ourselves many, many times over. We became lovers and fated enemies and victims and strangers to one another. We bid farewell to our better angels and watched them choke to death. Don't you remember? I remember standing over the heavens, stretched thin by my own hands, admiring the full breadth of our absurdity. And only then, did I ask myself: what is this? What are we doing? None of this makes any sense.
I see it clearly now, the exact mistake I've made. In trying to become everything, I made us nothing. The world I laid at our feet — there's nothing holding it together but the suspension of our disbelief. Our empire is built on sand, and it's only by the grace of our stubborn delusion that it remains upright. But we've been good liars, haven't we? Why should we stop now? I hope you understand what I'm asking of you.
The Foundation must believe that it is in control, just as much as the public needs the fiction of a coherent and rational world. It is a walking corpse, marching senselessly through trodden sand as if its heart hasn't stopped beating, as if its bones haven't turned to dust, and as if the war it fights for hasn't already been lost. We cannot disabuse it of the notion that it's still alive — that it still means something. The status quo must go on forever, beyond all reason and virtue, until it is cornered by inevitability and gunned down like a dog.
I won't allow anything less than that.
And I know you won't either. So keep writing.
My regards,
The Administrator
