“Just as the constant increase of entropy is the basic law of the universe, so it is the basic law of life to be ever more highly structured and to struggle against entropy.”

Vaclav Havel, 1986

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

Carl R. Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of Psychotherapy, 1961

ALTERNATE FIGMENTS:

The Monolith may be singular in its exact details, but like anything in existence, it fractals out into so many possibilites. So let's shift the hue shall we?

THE BELLER

The world ended. Josephine was free, and in the rubbles of the world, she found a particular bird… one who called herself… Greg.

The end of the world wasn't that bad, honestly.

Sure, billions died. I mourned them. Still do. But, if I'm being completely fair, their deaths bought me something I'd never had before: privacy.

AND THE REST IS HISTORY…

SCP-173 was the first article to have ever been written for the SCP wiki, thus making the SCP Foundation the very first organization to spring up and be fleshed out. This level of importance has made the Foundation an irreparable pillar of the wiki. So much so that only a few have truly imagined a world without it. Yet regardless of their influence on both real-world writing projects and fictional geopolitics, perhaps, perhaps this arrangement isn't for the best. After all, the lion might be the king of the jungle, but as is the case with all kingdoms…

The crown can only be held for so long.

Chaos On The Monolith is, at its core, about a world that is rotten at the foundations and hoping for a brighter tomorrow. Before recorded history, the Administrator hijacked this realm, one created by the Trismagistus, and set off altering history to his whims. On the tail end of the 19th century, the SCP Foundation was born.

Any article within this canon may be described as:

"An article that explores the exploitative and homogenous rule the SCP Foundation has over society, and how that’s affected their relations, employees, and future."

While COTM is usually hopeful in its messaging, don’t let that stop you from writing articles in all kinds of genres. This, and the following writing guide are guardrails meant to help an author direct but not suffocate their vision.

THEMES

  • "The only truly bad people are those who refuse to change."

Now you don't have to agree with this, but this is a guiding philosophy for a lot of COTM's character writing. Change is inevitable, change cannot be prevented forever. The Administrator is a character that embodies this theme. A man who physically cannot accept change, who cannot choose a new path (be it sunk cost or arrogance) and brings down everyone with him.

  • "Everyone has a scheme. Every action has a motive."

Nothing is truly accidental. Butterfly effect and all. The cogs of the world are always turning. You may think you have all the cards, but there's always someone ready to put you in checkmate.

  • "The Foundation is incredibly contradictory."

Inconsistencies riddle them from top to bottom; they contain all they deem anomalous, but to varying degrees of severity. They spill the blood of innocents, and yet claim to be saviors.

  • "The Foundation can't truly change."

For a system so rotten to the core, change can only go so far. Sometimes, the system just has to be burned away.

FREQUENT SYMBOLISM

Chaos: As is the title of this canon, Chaos is a recurring theme. Entropy is the course of all things after all.

Birds and Freedom: Across the canon, birds are a key part of this world's… well, everything. And they are frequently used to represent freedom, such as Daniel Carson's encounter with the Scarlet Falcon.

The Monolith: The Foundation wishes to be a Monolith for what counts as "normal" and what doesn't. In many ways, they do strongarm their way into that role. But in doing so, they only cause more pain.

The world of the monolith revolves around the SCP Foundation, the cancerous scaffolding of normalcy that it is. Though they aren't the only fish in the sea. There are several groups, lore facets, and tidbits that differentiate COTM from other canons, including but not limited to the following:

PEOPLE

The Administrator: An enigma. A man forged by the shadows he dwells within. Trapped in an endless cycle of forming the very Foundation that dooms the world. Little does he know, he can't tip the scales forever.

Dr. Azazel Quakers Vilson: The first apostle of the Feathered Forebearer. A grumpy figure who runs the Foundation's Investigation Section. Has the ability to summon, communicate with, and control all waterfowl, particularly mallards.

Dr. Pearl N. Langstrum: Pearl is many things. Founder of the Foundation's Counselling Division. Secretly a fish person. A transgender polyamorous Lesbian. But if there's one thing she isn't, it's hateful.

The Oak Of Ynys Môn: A magical being sent through time by the ancient Celtic druids during the first Roman conquest of Anglesey. Awoken in the late 1800s, he has a front row seat to the exchange of power from the HMFSCP to the Foundation. From almost the moment he awakens, he is set on a mission: to bring protection and prosperity to his island kingdom.

Michael Manticore: Founder of Manticorp. A vile man with delusions of grandeur. Reaching the understanding is his ultimate goal, which he will achieve under the watchful eyes of his draconic patron.

PLACES

Site-3: A Foundation Site with a focus on Anomalous Item storage. However, due its vast size and varied demographics within its staff, Site-3 operates in a variety of fields outside its primary purpose. O5-6 in particular, for unknown reasons, has an invested interest in the site's operations. Located in Merseyside, England.

France: The place with those long-ass breadsticks. More commonly known as LOI-1789 nowadays. It was utterly annihilated by the Horizon Initiative in 2030 and now remains as a charred, nigh-unlivable landfill of corpses.

The Noösphere: The Monolith doesn't only hold up the material world, the many realms of thought and dream are also beholden to the chaotic whims of mankind. But do not forget that the back rooms of reality were never meant to be seen by mortal eyes, and control is just as much of an illusion as everything else.

PLURIPOTENTS

The Trismagistus: A group of three mysterious beings that created the universe. Despite their nature, the Trismagistus are heavily involved in worldly matters, such as the creation of the Watchtowers and a long-fought proxy war with the Administrator, who stole and corrupted their creation.

The Feathered Forebearer: An old existence floating among the void, her slumber disturbed by creations beginning. Her body might have been long slain, but her spirit remained and created what we know to be birds.

The Scarlet King: The baron of oppression, lord of rape, symbol of imperialism, and the howling beast of the old world. You know him, you hate him, and you'll be happy to learn that he's long dead… mostly. It's complicated.

TERMS

Watchtowers: Beings created by the Trismagistus, each tasked with watching over an assigned species of multicellular life. They are conceptually linked to the survival/power of their assigned species, and vice versa.

The Ninth Occult War: A civil war within the Foundation that leads to their fall. Takes place between July 2037 and August 2038. While the veil doesn't immediately fall afterwards (the GOC and what remains of the Foundation try to keep it up at first), this is the beginning of the end.

Apostle: Loyal servants of the Forebearer, sometimes by choice, sometimes not.

Saint: Designated SCP-001-1 through -36 by the Foundation. Sought out by all alike, they are thirty-six humans ordained by God to make the world young again. They undo all anomalies near them and receive holy premonitions. While the definition of "anomaly" is unclear, their mission is certainly not.

International Association Parasport Federation (IAPF): An organizational committee run by various Groups of Interest, made to manage anomalous sports and resulting conflicts. A surprisingly large anchor of the Foundation's financial stability.

Noöspheric Intersection: Connected focal points and nodes of thought in the human subconscious, they intersect various concepts and create new ones. Also serving as hiding spaces for those with enough know-how.
