BLIND THE ALL-SEEING EYE

The Pod swings open, revealing the body-shaped cavity that fits you so well.

You enter.

You never could feel at ease in the belly of the beast.

Your feet squelch on slick streets as you trudge past sweating laborers who move with queer synchronicity. You realize they're following Xiangyao's heartbeat. Your own pounds in your ears, arrhythmic. There are so few of you, now.

The directions exist within your mind as a fractal idea, a folded memetic agent that shot behind your eyes when those four demons raided your home and killed your friends. It unravels on a need to know basis, and your feet follow the way as best they can.

You're led down a capillary alleyway. At the back, cracked concrete rests on heaving walls of flesh. Silent laborers smoke next to an unmarked metal door. You take a place beside them, pressing your back against it.

You feel a buzz, and words hiss into your skull. "Does the black moon howl?"

Your voice is nearly imperceptible. "It lies and lies and lies."

The door opens, and you disappear within.

In the only shred of light in the room stands your Commander. She is gaunt and her uniform carries dark brown stains. "Good," she says. "You're alive. Command can't take many more losses."

You nod. She sighs. "I've been coordinating with the communists. They're verified Insurgents, at least, but the choices in this city are piss-poor. We're run aground. Shot in the streets by the so-called Foundation."

"Those damn impostors," she spits with venom, "crushing the only ones left who still believe in the mission. As if we aren't their only hope. Those poor imbeciles." Her fists clench, then slowly uncurl. "It doesn't matter. We have a job to do. Since the Pangara sank, half the Cells in the hemisphere are decapitated. They lack an operator on duty."

The lights flicker on. The Coordination Pod stands in the center of the chamber, smooth as a river stone and beset with dim rainbows of cables.

You can't believe it. How did any make it out?

The Commander nods. "We had this hidden in the city as a contingency. The true Foundation never operates without a backup."

"We need you in there. Someone has to untangle the knots the satellite groups have woven in our absence. I'll handle affairs in Xiangyao while you're under. Protect the mission."

The Pod swings open, revealing the body-shaped cavity that fits you so well.

You enter.
