Hey kid.
I'm Fish^12. Want some cool ass resources for making stuff? You've come to the right place. This is the black market for wiki license compatible sources. I'm also assuming you already know how the wiki license works.
In any case, let's get to it.
Licensing: CC BY-SA 4.0
Description: Online software for producing high quality maps. Has added functionality for alt-history and fantasy worldbuilding. Has a paid version with more tools.
Licensing: CC BY-SA 3.0, varies
Description: Similar to MapChart, featuring a library of street level images. Has a neat viewing experience similar to Google Maps. Keep in mind that some images may be licensed under NC, which is not compatible with the wiki.
Licensing: CC BY-SA 3.0, varies
Link: https://game-icons.net/
Description: Hundreds of high quality icons originally intended for video games but can be used as images elsewhere. Can also be formatted with an in-browser editor, but it has limited functionality.
“Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Licensing: Public Domain
Description: Resource for finding books that have been released to the public domain. Can be used as research and/or quotations. Some titles may still be copyrighted.
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.”
Licensing: Public Domain
Link: https://librivox.org/
Description: Similar to Project Gutenberg, but with a focus on public domain audiobooks. Audiobooks are narrated by volunteers!
Licensing: CC BY-SA 3.0
Link: https://fortepan.eu/
Description: Repository of historical European images, sorted into location and year. Lots of black and white images.
Licensing: Varies
Link: https://freesound.org/
Description: Collaborative collection of sound effects, loops, and other noises. Also has a forum, for some reason.
Licensing: Varies
Link: https://openverse.org/
Description: Library of images and audio, with a strong emphasis on art and culture. You will find a lot of images collected from museums such as the MET, Satakunnan, and the Smithsonian.
Licensing: CC, varies
Link: https://eol.org/
Description: Encyclopedia full of biology. Also includes research papers, habitat information, maps, various media, scientific names, and other assorted facts. It's a little messy, but very charming. Some images may be NC and not compatible with the wiki license.
Licensing: CC BY 3.0
Description: A library of pose references for artists. It is an independent startup, so it has a Ko-Fi and a store with an absurd number of extremely specific themes for poses. Also has a pretty decent range of body types.
Licensing: MIT
Link: https://heroicons.com/
Description: A library of small icons that add a subtle touch to any web design. Comes in SVGs. This is probably my favorite here and one I'll try to take advantage of.
Licensing: CC BY-S.A 2.5
Description: Fancy hub for retro diagrams and detailed astrological information. Also contains numerous links to other websites featuring so many space related images, wrapped up in charming 2000s era web design. You will have to double check their licenses, though.
Licensing: Varies
Link: https://creepystock.com/
Description: Collection of spooky and unsettling images curated from multiple sites. Features all manners of horror, from paintings, statues, costumes, and environments. Has a neat search system that can also narrow down results based on license. Licensing varies WILDLY. Ensure that any images used are wiki compatible.
Please leave a comment or contact Fish^12 if you want to update this list with additional resources. Updating the list will be left to my discretion.
The purpose of this resource is to detail some of the more obscure and unique wiki compatible sources and is not intended to be comprehensive. US governmental organizations release almost all of their images and documents under public domain, such as NASA, DoD, and CIA. There are universities that release educational material for free, such as MIT, TED, and OpenStax. Science driven organizations will release research papers and studies, such as GEO, MDPI, and PLOS.
