Opinions

Unless it's a serviceable work that simply isn't for me, I don't novote the works I read. I tend to upvote or downvote these works based on an informal set of criteria that revolve around respecting the reader in some form, as described below.

Thematic Core: This pertains to respecting the reader's emotional intelligence and investment. All non-joke works should be about something. They might prompt the reader to think about a moral or political point, teach the reader about an academic subject the author is passionate about, or something else that has the goal of conveying or inciting specific emotions within the reader. Whether it's character-centric longform or poignant shortform, if a work lacks some sort of authentic core, I'll likely find it to ring hollow and downvote it. Not every work needs to be a heavy-handed metaphor for depression, but there should at least be some sort of authentic emotion being conveyed, rather than pure aura and hype moments. Articles that demonstrate technical proficiency with writing will still fall flat for me and be downvoted if certain story elements (especially the ending) contradict the thematic core demonstrated by the rest of the piece. At the end of the day, all works have themes of some kind that the reader will pick up on, regardless of the author's intent; thus, it's the author's job to keep these themes coherent throughout.

Of course, this core should actually be developed by the work in some way. I've downvoted many works for using its themes as a punchline: rather than using its context as a piece of fiction to elevate or explore the themes, they end with a very flat "haha, it's these real-life themes you might be familiar with!", which I find to also ring hollow and oftentimes border on distastefulness.

Time and Length: This comes down to respecting the reader's time. The best articles I've read do an excellent job of hooking me at the start and rehooking me at its various story beats. If it's a character-centric piece, give me a reason to care about or empathize with these characters. (This is why I avoid many works involving preexisting author avatars—the writer tends to forgo initial characterization because they assume the reader is already familiar with them.) If it's part of a series or connected to other SCPs, don't make me read five other pages as homework. If it's a longer story, keep your pacing in check so that the narrative doesn't stall out or progress too quickly. Having concrete stakes of some kind, and having a well-written ending that serves as a worthy culmination of everything the narrative works towards, is also essential for making sure the reader's time doesn't feel wasted.

Depth: This is a matter of respecting the reader's non-emotional intelligence one way or another. Most readers on the site won't be familiar with certain technical (e.g. scientific) concepts, so if you're going to use them in your works, please make the story accessible enough where laymen can follow along even if they don't absorb every detail. On the other hand, don't dumb things down (or worse, use incoherent technobabble) to the point where glaring inaccuracies arise and detract from the piece's quality. This also applies to the thematic core criterion—if you spell out your themes too directly, you run the risk of assuming that the reader isn't intelligent enough to recognize and read subtext.

Some of my favorite articles reward perceptive readers with smaller, easy-to-miss details that add an additional layer of enjoyment and narrative depth to the story at large. I'm not the most perceptive reader in the world, but if I do find these, I will definitely enjoy them.

Accessibility: This is a matter of respecting the reader's eyes (and ears and so on). If the color contrast or design of your article/etc makes it impossible for me to read it, I will downvote it no matter how good the rest of it is.
