Department Overview
What would eventually become AWD was formed during the Seventh Occult War when, under O5 command, Dr. Olaf Lunden and several other individuals formed the War-Time Production Division (WTPD). The Division, which included members from both the Foundation and Allied Occult Initiative, began to design and construct paraweapons for use against Obskuracorps. While short-lived, this think-tank, composed of mechanical engineers and occult specialists, would produce several anomalous artifacts and weapons that proved extremely useful in the war.
In the wake of the war, it was decided that having a dedicated permanent team for the designing and manufacturing of paraweapons would prove useful. Thus, under the guidance of O5-7, the Department of Anomalous Weapons Development was established in 1947, with Dr. Lunden as its Director. Headquartered initially at Site-6, the beginning years of AWD proved extremely prosperous. While the Foundation itself was not involved with any major conflicts at this time, AWD still produced countless designs that would later be integrated into standard MTF gear. Dr. Lunden eventually stepped down from his position as Director in 1979, selecting Dr. Felipe Everest as his replacement. At the time, Dr. Everest was the Regional Director of AWD in Central America.
Almost immediately, there was a noticeable change in AWD. It was at this point that the Headquarters of the Department were relocated to the newly constructed Area-34, a Foundation facility located in the mountains near San Jose, Costa Rica. A focus was placed on studying fields of anomalous sciences that were, at the time, unexplored for potential weaponization. While more simple paraweapons were still made, this saw the rise of weapons and technology that incorporated more esoteric fields such as the Noosphere, nomenclative anomalies, and ontology. While this time also saw a stark increase in the casualties, a majority of these weapons proved to be viable for Foundation use.
It wasn't until 2018 that AWD would receive a new Director. During a visit to Site-01, Dir. Everest's convoy was ambushed by unknown assailants, with him being one of the casualties. It was decided at this time that his son, Dr. Ezra Everest, would inherit the position of Director. Dr. Everest followed in his father's footsteps, focusing on developing and designing more experimental weapons while still producing basic weaponry based on the more well-known fields of anomalous science.
However, AWD would suffer a significant loss in the attempted decommissioning of SCP-6946. The 32nd decommissioning attempt of the anomaly would result in a massive loss of equipment and of the anomaly itself. This, combined with the mishandling of SCP-6821 — both of which were directly caused or set in motion by Dr. Ezra Everest — resulted in the mass downsizing of the Department. Dr. Everest himself was removed as Director. An attempt was made to find a new Director. But with no suitable candidates, the Department quietly entered a reserve period and focused on only maintaining its current projects.
However, in 2025, interest in a fully functioning AWD arose. Jimmy Day was appointed as the new Director of AWD by the O5 Council and Ethics Committee. While returning to a fully operational state, AWD still lacks the resources it had before Ezra's bumbling. Director Day aims to rebuild the Department's reputation and regain trust.

Subdivisions
Engineering & Designing
Senior Engineer Fidel Chavez
"From Idea to Impact."
Formerly two separate divisions before AWD's downsizing, Engineering & Designing oversees the full lifecycle of paraweapon creation, from initial concept up to final testing. Designers draft and refine design packets, while engineers implement and construct them.
Paraweapon Studies
Dr. Sanaa El-Badri
"Know Thy Enemy's Blade."
The Paraweapon Studies Division focuses on the cataloging, dissection, and evaluation of non-Foundation paraweapons. Paraweapon Studies aims to understand the methodologies of others, both to defend against them and learn from them.
Occult Studies
Specialist Klymene
"Arming the Unknown."
The Occult Studies Division studies thaumaturgy, psionics, occultism, and other forms of parasciences for applications in weaponry. The majority of the Division's staff are also employed in other Departments specific to their expertise, facilitating cross-Department collaboration.
Testing
Dr. Andrés Molina
"Hitting the Right Targets."
The final line between development and deployment, the Testing Division subjects all designs to rigorous testing. Testing runs both simulations and live combat evaluations to ensure that any designs don't have unintended results.
Associated Foundation Sites
Area-34
The current headquarters of AWD, Area-34 is located in the central mountains of Costa Rica, near the capital of San Jose. Alongside the design, construction, and testing of AWD products, Area-34 also specializes in responding to and containing anomalies in Central America. While still operational, Area-34 is currently undergoing repairs and renovations.
Site-6
The former headquarters of AWD, Site-6 is located in the Norwegian islands of Svalbard. Since its demotion from AWD HQ, Site-6 has primarily served as a storage facility and launching ground for paraweapon testing in the Arctic.
Site-14
The first storage facility explicitly built for AWD use, Site-14 was one of the largest centers of AWD activity in Eastern Europe before its destruction. After suffering several system failures and a catastrophic explosion, Site-14 was decommissioned from the Secure Facilities Dossier. The ruins of Site-14 have since become a hotspot for anomalous occurrences.
Site-345
Situated in Central Europe, Site-345 is a storage and testing ground for non-Foundation weaponry.
Associated Mobile Task Forces
Armed Mobile Task Force Gamma-27 ("Breaking and Entering")
A mobile task force whose sole purpose was the destruction of SCP-359 and obtaining access to SCP-359-A. AMTF G-27 received numerous design packets and products from AWD during its operations.
Armed Mobile Task Force Iota-27 ("Big Sticks")
A battalion-sized task force stationed at Area-34, AMTF I-27's primary duty is to respond to hostile GoI activity in Central America, primarily those in Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua. AMTF I-27 is fully outfitted with prototype AWD paraweapons and body armor. The task force is upheld as an example of the type of technology AWD could produce if given the proper resources.
