Artist/Author's Notes
Recently, I realized that how I think of Barrikada (from my psychosexual horror series, Woman of Stone and Blood) is largely informed by stuff about her that only exists in my head, and is thus only accessible to me. I figured that I should probably share some of that with everyone. She's a bit of a blorbo for me and it sucks that the vast majority of stuff on the site with her in it so far (THAT I WROTE! I WROTE ALL OF IT!! THIS IS MY FAULT!!!) is very centered on her being a victim of abuse.
I want to post something where she's a lot more than that, but it's important to me that I do it justice (I have a very topical 001 proposal in the works, believe it or not). In the meantime, here are some fun facts about her that I've chosen to release from the confines of my squishy lil brain.
Fun Facts
- While in a high-Hume environment, Barrikada's process of physical aging is arrested nearly entirely. By her 100th birthday, she still appears to be in her mid-thirties1. Yes, this is a Daevite thing.
- Whenever new junior researchers are placed under her supervision, she insists on giving them a second tour of Site-19 (because "Onboarding barely does shit but tell you where not to go, so if I don't do this, you'll be asking me where the cafeteria is for the next three months…").
- If she has the time to, Barrikada likes to make her friends cards for their birthdays/Christmas. She's also amazing at making paper flowers.
- In the late 90s, Barrikada and three other researchers formed a 50s/60s-esque quartet and wrote cheeky, science-themed songs2 for fun.
- Barrikada's favorite music genres are rap and 80s pop, with the former developing after she first listened to C.I.A. (Criminals in Action) during a fixation-fueled period of personal research into American socialist media3.
- After undergoing therapeutic phlebotomy to treat her chronic hemochromatosis4, Barrikada can tell whether the blood drawn was used for testing (a frequent occurrence, given its dramatically elevated Hume levels) or destroyed.
- When the aforementioned blood is transfused into a sentient being, she tends to feel more energetic.
- At least one claw hairclip can be found on her person at all times — usually attached to a bag or her lanyard.
- Understandable, given how years prior, she experienced an incident where she wasn't paying attention and ended up with the tips of her hair touching the water in the toilet. Thinking about this situation makes her want to crawl out of her skin, as one would imagine.
- George W. Bush is her mortal enemy.
- Barrikada, despite swearing up and down that her relationship isn't horrific, is really, really good at noticing signs of abuse in other people.
- She always tries her best to be helpful — once to the point of being asked to stop, which she felt terrible about for a long time.
- Despite having to keep herself from being overzealous, she is great at helping people with unaddressed reports to HR/Intra-Foundation Judiciary5.
- She was invited to be one of Site-19's chess team coaches after refusing to compete due to anxiety (the mental state of an individual who became an International Master at 14 with parents who acted like her life depended on it is decidedly rocky).
- Barrikada will never admit to it, but part of her likes how being so tall gives her some leeway with the dress code — namely the part of it that dictates acceptable skirt/dress length.
- It's somewhat of a silver lining, considering how every pair of pants exposes her ankles and she can hardly ever find shoes in a women's size 12.
