The SCP-9000 Contest entry Neglected Idylls is about a group of foundation researchers trying to figure out why Appalachia is so weird. It has… a lot of different anomalies in it. Some known, some that haven’t been described in other articles. And some peacock coal.
This article feels almost like an anthology. So many things happen throughout it. There’s multiple monsters and multiple strange things to be explained. So I wasn’t quite sure what all I should depict. So, I’m drawing the mountains themselves. I wanted to keep it fairly simple because I knew ONE of the things I wanted to draw some of that peacock coal coloration.
Pretty early on, they find this coal that has iridescent colors. This is a real thing, of course, but it’s assigned magical properties in this story. I also figured, why not add some of those lights in the sky for good measure.
