"When I first met Mr. Lupin, well, I didn't know his name. His disguise was impeccable, I certainly didn't recognize him. But anyway, he immediately came across as a gentleman. Someone any person would feel easy around, and like an idiot I let my guard down."
"Until the incident."
"Yes. Yes, that was it. An incident. Let's call it that. Makes it sound like I was unlucky, not weak. I was charmed by him, I'll tell you that."
"What happened that night?"
"I mean, I found him where he wasn't supposed to be. I confronted him alone. I was alone, at the time. Now, my mistake was thinking there was a misunderstanding, that at least I could get some more information. And like, I work out. He looked pretty skinny, so I thought if things went bad I could hold him down and call for help. So I walk forward, start to ask him something, and next thing I know I was knocked out."
"He's not someone to take lightly."
"That's the thing. I woke up, bandage around my head. I thought one of our folks had done it until I saw the card in my hand. No one else around, so he wasn't in a hurry, and yeah, we were near a sick room, but what kind of thief sees he's got time and bandages you up instead of stealing more or escaping? I mean, I guess I was right the first time."
"About what?"
"That he's a gentleman."
