A Strange Door in My Basement

Has anyone here seen something like this before?

My mom's getting old, old enough to where a 3 bedroom, 2 story house is far too big for one retired arthritic to manage. So, she's decided to move out, sell the place, and live out the rest of her days somewhere tropical with lots of wine. Part of the process is going through all the boxes in the basement to see what's important and what's able to be sold on eBay. As her only child, I've driven down to help her with moving some of the heavier things.

The door.
(Family photo censored for privacy.)

It was going pretty normal at first: couple of old records there, family photos here, some Halloween decorations, etc. etc. Then I found a door, tucked away in the corner behind some camping gear. Honestly, I didn't think too much of it at first. Figured it was a closet or something. But as I kept working, something in the back of my mind kept nagging about it. It wasn't until I had discovered the third copy of Monopoly in as many boxes that it dawned on me:

I'd never been in that room before. As a kid it had simply just been one of those doors your parents didn't want you going into. As a teen, I'd been too busy hanging out with my friends to care much about some random door in our basement. By the time I moved out, the door had been relegated to the realm of childhood half-memories that I might've imagined.

Curious about what was in the room, I asked my mom and she simply shrugged. Apparently, the door had been locked when we moved in. Nobody in my family had been in it. Not for lack of trying, mind you. My dad had tried to get in contact with the previous owners to no success. When he called the realtors, they couldn't find any records of them. After a locksmith wasn't able to get in, my parents gave up and just assumed it was an old closet.

Has anyone here heard of anything like this before?

OP, have you tried seeing if you can hear anything behind it?

Had to press my ear against the door to hear anything and it almost sounded like… static? I'm not sure if any of you have heard a CRT degauss before, but it was kind of like that. Or the electric hum that comes from cheap fluorescent lights at a gas station.

The door felt warm, too. Not sure what to make of it.

I came downstairs this morning after eating breakfast and I found a key on the carpet in front of the door.

I didn't put it there.

Maybe it fell out of one of the boxes you moved yesterday or you accidentally knocked it off a shelf and didn't notice.

I'm almost positive it wasn't there last night.

Where else could it have come from lol

DaPizzaMan 02/07/26 (Saturday) 10:05:28 #24329339

Open it lol

I'm with >DaPizzaMan, OP. You didn't hear anything moving behind it, so it's probably safe to take a quick peek. Worst case, you slam it shut, lock it, and throw away the key.

OP, you good?

I'm fine, just needed to step away from the computer for a bit.

I can't stop thinking about how weird that tunnel is. It's so dark in there, like someone hung a curtain a few feet away from the entrance. Even the strongest flashlight I could find barely lit up more than a couple paces.

That weird static-y sound is still there, but I can make it out more clearly now. It almost sounds like something is screaming. The air inside is scratchy somehow, but I can only feel it if I stick my hand beyond the threshold.

It's so warm in there…

I think I'm going to walk into it for a few yards, then come right back out. I've got a flashlight and some string I can use to make sure I don't get lost. Wish me luck.

So, turns out it led to an old electrical closet that never got shut off. Called the electrical company and they're coming over on Tuesday to get it sorted out. In the mean time, I'm going to help my mom finish going through the rest of the basement.
