Item #: SCP-118
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: When not being studied, SCP-118 shall be contained in a locked safe within Sector-19, unplugged. Test chambers for SCP-118 shall be windowless, with a single point of entry and a light sealed antechamber between the test chamber and the outside facility. Only D-class personnel should be exposed to the light shed by SCP-118. Researchers are required to undergo an Electrocardiogram (EKG) before and after each test session. Unusual EKG readings are grounds for dismissal from projects utilizing SCP-118.
Description: SCP-118 consists of a ███████ brand 'lava lamp', serial number ████████ . The 'lava' portion contains a clear solution of glycol and water with a second red coloured solution of paraffin wax and carbon tetrachloride typical to such devices. Records from ███████ show that the lamp was manufactured in 1969 in █████, England. Light shed by SCP-118 falls entirely within the standard visible spectrum.
Exposure to SCP-118 is asymptomatic in most cases. Experiments with D-class personnel show susceptibility to the effects of SCP-118 to be roughly 20%, with a statistically significant bias toward males. No other traits have correlation. Subjects who are susceptible to SCP-118 exposure undergo increasingly severe cardiac arrhythmia, culminating in cardiac arrest within a mean exposure time of three hours. The damage is cumulative and permanent. Changes in health only occur when the unit is plugged in and the 'lava' is in motion, within direct line of sight to SCP-118.
Object was recovered from █████ ███ Retirement Home during investigation into the death of Dr. ████, who was visiting [REDACTED]. Cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest due to exposure to SCP-118. Numerous deaths may have been caused by SCP-118, but due the nature of the facility such deaths may have been assumed to be of natural causes. Staff were mostly unaffected due to having a predominantly female population, small size relative to the size of the facility and low turnover rate.
Addendum-118a: Another lamp from the same production batch was discovered onsite at [DATA EXPUNGED], with identical properties to the original. The original production size according to ███████ was over 10000 units, with an estimated 100 still functional currently.
Addendum-118b: Official request for update to containment procedures due to findings expressed in file #118-e (Experiment Log 118)
